Czech divers explore the wreck of the Britannic in the Aegean Sea

A team of Czech divers has helped explore the wreck of the British ocean liner HMHS Britannic lying more than 100 metres below the surface of the Aegean Sea near the Greek island of Kea. The expedition, led by Petr Slezák, took place at the end of October under extremely demanding conditions caused by strong currents and great depth. During three dives, the team documented the current state of the wreck and examined its stern, promenade deck, and bow with the captain’s bridge. They discovered two well-preserved engine telegraphs still fixed in their original positions. The Britannic, sister ship to the Titanic, sank in November 1916 after hitting a naval mine during the First World War. Only 30 of the more than 1,000 people on board lost their lives.
