Czechia must expand elderly care as over-80 population set to reach 900,000 by 2050

By 2050, more than 900,000 people in Czechia will be over 80, with a third expected to need intensive social services or residential care, Labour Minister Marian Jurečka (Christian Democrats) warned. Current projections show the number in this age group will more than double within 15 years, according to health data chief Ladislav Dušek. Dementia and post-stroke conditions will be among the most common diagnoses, with Alzheimer’s cases rising from 80,000 to over 250,000. Authorities stress the need to boost community and home care, but warn of looming staffing shortages in health and social services.
