Prague 5 council backs proposal to name public space after late pop idol Karel Gott

The Prague 5 district council has endorsed a proposal to name a public space near Bertramka in  Smíchov after the legendary Czech singer Karel Gott. The final decision on naming public spaces and streets in the capital rests with Prague City Hall.

The selected square, which would bear the late singer’s name, would be in the vicinity of the villa where Gott lived for many years and where a memorial site dedicated to the singer is set to open later this year.

Karel Gott died on October 1, 2019, at the age of 80.

Often dubbed the "Sinatra of the East," Gott was a towering figure in Czech popular music, shaping generations of listeners with his unmistakable voice and charisma.
