PM Fiala in Brussels: No new climate goals and strong support for Ukraine—except Hungary

At the EU summit in Brussels, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democratic Party) said the EU should not adopt new climate targets for 2040. According to him, such goals could harm Europe’s competitiveness, and several countries including Poland agree. The European Commission plans to propose a 90% CO2 reduction target by 2040. Fiala also called for changes to the planned ETS2 carbon trading system, warning it could raise household costs for energy and fuel.

Fiala also confirmed that 26 of 27 EU leaders supported continued military aid to Ukraine, with only Hungary’s Viktor Orbán dissenting. “A strong and well-armed Ukraine is the only path to sustainable peace,” Fiala said, reaffirming Czech support, including participation in the ammunition initiative.
