Czech MPs ratify Vatican treaty amid confidentiality concerns

Czech MPs have approved the ratification of a treaty between Czechia and the Vatican, despite concerns over confidentiality clauses. The Senate had already approved the treaty in January. The Chamber of Deputies rejected the Pirates' request to delay approval for a constitutional review, though a group of senators plans to appeal to the Constitutional Court before President Petr Pavel signs the treaty.

Out of 152 MPs present, 92 voted in favour, 9 against. All parliamentary clubs supported the treaty, except the Pirates, who were unanimously opposed. Freedom and Direct Democracy MPs abstained, with Jaroslav Foldyna as the exception, and half of ANO MPs also abstained.

The Lower House of Parliament also approved a resolution stating that the treaty’s approval would not extend confidentiality beyond current laws. It called on the government to continue protecting abuse victims and negotiate with churches about the scope of pastoral workers.
