Czech government pushes for five-year emissions reporting period for carmakers

The Czech government is advocating for a five-year period for car manufacturers to meet emissions targets instead of the three-year framework proposed by the European Commission, Transport Minister Martin Kupka said. Prime Minister Petr Fiala stressed the need for broader revisions to the EU’s Green Deal, arguing that high fines threaten the competitiveness of European automakers.

Nošovice-based Hyundai supports a five-year period but welcomes any adjustments to provide more flexibility in production. The Czech automotive industry, contributing 9% to the national GDP and employing 500,000 people, is currently grappling with weak demand, rising competition from China, and sluggish electric vehicle sales.
