Welfare reform in Czechia may face delay until October

The introduction of a welfare reform that would consolidate four social benefits into a single support payment might be postponed from July to October. Labor Minister Marian Jurečka (Christian Democrats) cited delays in parliamentary debates as the reason. The Chamber of Deputies’ Social Affairs Committee has postponed discussions on the reform until February 5, pushing further deliberations to a later date. The proposed reform would replace housing allowances, subsistence benefits, and child allowances with a single support payment, streamlining applications and processing. Eligibility would involve stricter assessments of applicants' income and assets, with potential bonuses for employed recipients. Opposition parties, the ombudsman, and experts have raised concerns about the plan.
