    The country’s D1 motorway, which connects Prague, Brno and Ostrava and runs to the Czech-Polish border, has been fully completed 58 years after construction began. The last unfinished section between Přerov and Říkovice, which cost about seven billion crowns, opened to drivers on Friday. The roughly ten-kilometre stretch was originally due to open in March next year, but construction was completed about three months early, according to the Road and Motorway Directorate. The D1 is the country’s oldest and longest motorway, and in some sections the busiest. Initial plans date back to the 1930s, but construction of the first section began only in 1967 after being delayed by the war.

    Senate Speaker Miloš Vystrčil called for building trust as the foundation of a functioning society in his Advent address on Thursday. He said this requires respectful dialogue, mutual listening and a willingness to reach agreements. According to Vystrčil, a society without trust is destined for poverty, disintegration or loss of freedom. He described Czechia as a beautiful, safe and free country, ranking among the world’s 15 safest states, one of the least indebted in the EU, with an economy and real wages that are growing.

    The European Union will provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan, leaders agreed after hours of talks at a summit in Brussels. The deal was announced on social media platform X by European Council President António Costa. The Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia will not join the guarantees linked to the loan, which will be backed by the remaining 24 EU member states. Work will also continue on the use of a so-called reparations loan for Ukraine secured by frozen Russian assets, according to the summit conclusions.

    A march called Light for the Castle, organized by the group Million Moments for Democracy, brought more than 175,000 signatures to Hradčany Square in the evening on Thursday in support of President Petr Pavel and his positions. The organizers want to hand them over to the Presidential Office. According to them, the aim of the appeal entitled "We Stand Behind the President" is to support the defense of democratic values that the president currently represents. Critical remarks directed at the government were voiced at the event.

    President Petr Pavel and his wife Eva will meet with young football players who were subjected to racist abuse by fans on a train to a match in November. Police are investigating the case on suspicion of a criminal offence related to defamation of a nation, race, ethnic or other group. The presidential couple will also receive women released from prison who have successfully reintegrated into society, selected children who sent drawings or letters to the presidential couple and volunteers from the DobroCentrum of St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno.

    The Czech Republic will also take part next year in protecting Slovak airspace. This was confirmed on Thursday during a telephone call by the signing of a declaration by Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna (for SPD) and his Slovak counterpart Robert Kaliňák. The Ministry of Defense reported this on the social network X.

    Zůna, who took office on Monday, also discussed with Kaliňák the existing cooperation between the two countries in defense and the defense industry, as well as the possibility of further development in these areas.

    From January, the number of medical out-of-hours clinics will be reduced, with services mainly provided at hospital emergency departments. There will be 16 fewer out-of-hours clinics for adults; pediatric out-of-hours services will be available at all hospital pediatric departments, and dental clinics will rotate in some regions.

    A list of out-of-hours clinics with their opening hours will be published by January 1 on the websites of health insurance companies. This was stated at Thursday’s press conference by Jan Bodnár, deputy director of the General Health Insurance Company (VZP), and Martin Balada, president of the Association of Health Insurance Companies.

    The leader of the opposition Mayors and Independents (STAN), Vít Rakušan, said in response to a question from ČTK after Thursday’s meeting of STAN’s expert team that he is ready to visit the parliamentary clubs of the governing parties ahead of the election of a deputy speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.

    Rakušan is a candidate for the post of deputy speaker of the chamber and can run only now, after he and the entire government of Petr Fiala (ODS) ended their roles on Monday, when he stepped down as deputy prime minister and interior minister. According to Rakušan, STAN has no other candidate, and the vote could take place in January.

    The salaries of top politicians will increase by approximately five percent starting in January. For the first time ever, the prime minister and the presidents of the chambers of parliament will earn more than CZK 300,000 gross per month. The salary of an ordinary member of parliament will increase by CZK 5,500 to CZK 115,000. The president will receive CZK 383,200, which is CZK 18,200 more than this year. This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MPSV) on the announcement of the base salary from which salaries are derived.
