The coming nights in Czechia will be very frosty. Minimum temperatures may locally drop to 12 to 16 degrees Celsius below zero. Meteorologists issued a warning about severe frost today, which is valid from Monday morning until Thursday morning for most of the country. In eastern Moravia, more cloud cover is expected, so apart from Monday morning it will be somewhat warmer there. The warning also does not apply to most of the Central Bohemian Region and Prague.

The Czech Philharmonic (ČF), from whose first concert 130 years have passed on Sunday, strives to be a national musical representative. It is composed predominantly of Czech musicians, but it aims to perform a world repertoire. For this reason as well, a complete set of Gustav Mahler’s completed symphonies recorded under the direction of Semyon Bychkov will be released for its 130th anniversary. This was stated to the Czech News Agency (ČTK) by ČF’s Director General David Mareček.

The Prague Stock Exchange improved its record once again as the PX index surpassed 2,700 points. Before the weekend, it rose by 0.56 percent to 2,700.62 points. Trading in 2026 thus began immediately with a new record. The rise was supported by gains in most of the main issues. This follows from the trading results published on the exchange’s website.

The Atlanta basketball players lost 117–134 to Toronto on the road in the NBA, and not even Czech national team player Vít Krejčí could prevent the defeat, despite making all four of his three-point attempts and scoring 13 points. In 23 minutes on the court, he also added 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. The star of the evening on Saturday was Jaylen Brown of Boston, who led a 146–115 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers with 50 points. Exactly four years later, he matched his personal career high.

The chairmen of the Senate caucuses of ODS and TOP 09, STAN, KDU-ČSL, SEN 21 and the Pirates jointly called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) to make it clear to Tomio Okamura, the head of the Chamber of Deputies and the governing SPD movement, that his statements regarding Ukraine harm the Czech Republic and are incompatible with the responsible performance of the highest constitutional offices as well as with the declared principles of the foreign policy of the current ANO, SPD and Motorists government. Opposition politicians distanced themselves from Okamura’s remarks, which were made in his New Year’s address. In a statement issued on Sunday and sent by representatives of four Senate caucuses to the Czech News Agency (ČTK), they described them as scandalous.

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs now considers it important to calm the situation in Venezuela and to conduct diplomatic negotiations, including with the local opposition. This was stated by the head of Czech diplomacy, Petr Macinka (Motorists), in a statement sent to ČTK. Today, the United States carried out extensive air strikes in this South American country, detained its authoritarian president Nicolás Maduro, and removed him from Venezuela. Macinka identified the safety of Czech citizens as the top priority of his office.

The government is preparing to postpone the launch of housing support for people in housing distress. Instead of starting in July, it could begin in September. Until the end of August, housing contact points would offer only advisory services. The group of people eligible to receive advice is also expected to be narrowed. The registration of apartments, the processing of authorizations to provide support, and the granting of allowances would be halted. This follows from a planned amendment to the Housing Support Act, which the government is set to discuss on Monday.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) will fly to Paris on Tuesday, January 6, where he will take part in a meeting of leaders of the so-called ‘coalition of the willing,’ that is, countries supporting Ukraine following Russia’s invasion. He said this in a video posted today on his social media accounts. At the same time, he did not comment on the New Year’s address by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura, in which the leader of the governing SPD movement criticized the provision of weapons to Ukraine as well as Ukraine’s leadership—remarks that sparked a sharp reaction from the opposition, as well as from Ukrainian politicians and diplomats.

Last year, with an average temperature of 8.8 degrees Celsius, was the fourth coldest of the past decade. However, in a longer-term comparison dating back to 1961 (when meteorologists began calculating average annual temperatures in the country) it still ranked among the warmer years. It was the 13th warmest year on record, according to preliminary data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) published on Facebook. According to the same data, 2025 was also a dry year, with the average annual precipitation total being the seventh lowest since 1961.
