Czechia will not join Hungary in threatening to block the EU’s planned 20th sanctions package against Russia, Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček said on Czech Television’s debate programme on Sunday.
Hungary has said it may block the new sanctions if Ukraine does not resume the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. Supplies to Slovakia and Hungary via Ukraine were interrupted at the end of January.
Havlíček called for further negotiations on the issue and suggested the involvement of an independent arbitrator. He also said Czechia had offered Slovakia oil supplies through its pipeline network, though securing them could take about a year.
Ukraine says the disruption was caused by Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure. However, Slovakia and Hungary have accused Kyiv of political pressure linked to Hungary’s opposition to Ukraine joining the EU.

Meteorologists have expanded an earlier warning about rising river levels in parts of Czechia. The increase is expected mainly in eastern Bohemia from Sunday evening, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute informed.
Rivers in some areas could reach the lowest flood alert level. However, water is not expected to overflow riverbanks, though faster runoff and waterlogged soil could weaken the stability of trees.
The warning applies to parts of the Vysočina and South Bohemian regions as well as areas in the Central Bohemian, Pardubice, Hradec Králové and Liberec regions.
A separate warning for freezing rain remains in effect until Sunday afternoon, mainly in the Olomouc region.

Investigators tried to force him to confess that he had staged the so-called Číhošť miracle, when a cross in the local church appeared to move while he was celebrating mass.
A special mass at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary will begin an hour before noon on Sunday.

A Czech-Slovak documentary by Czech director Pepa Lubojacki has won the Caligari Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, Berlinale.
The film If Pigeons Turned to Gold was selected as the best film in the Forum section by a three-member independent jury, festival organisers said on Saturday. Shot on a mobile phone, the documentary explores why Lubojacki’s brother and two cousins became homeless and struggle with addiction.
The Caligari Prize is awarded to the best film in the festival’s Forum section by an independent jury.
A Czech or Slovak film has not previously won the Caligari Prize. The last filmmaker from Central and Eastern Europe to receive it was Hungarian director Béla Tarr in 1994 for his film Satantango.

Czech tennis player Jakub Menšík will not play for the title in Doha after losing his semi-final to France’s Arthur Fils 6–4, 7–6. The defeat came a day after the 20-year-old’s upset win over world number two Jannik Sinner.
