According to data from the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office (NSZ), crime in the Czech Republic remained roughly at the same level last year as in 2024. However, cases involving high levels of aggression, especially among children, are increasing.

So-called “experience-driven violence” is also beginning to appear regularly — this refers to violent behaviour among children and adolescents motivated mainly by the desire to experience something, test boundaries, or gain an adrenaline rush.

In the Czech Republic, 186,858 new criminal proceedings were initiated last year, which authorities had to address and in which prosecutors supervised compliance with legal procedures. The year before, there were 189,912 such cases.

The new Archbishop of Prague, Stanislav Přibyl, today received the pallium from Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. The pallium is a ceremonial liturgical vestment worn by senior Church leaders and symbolizes an archbishop's pastoral authority and service to the faithful.

The presentation took place during Mass in St. Peter's Basilica as part of the feast celebrating Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It is a long-standing tradition for the Pope to bless pallia on this feast day for metropolitan archbishops appointed during the previous year. This year, the Pope blessed pallia for 35 metropolitan archbishops from around the world.

Archbishop Přibyl is now the second current pallium bearer in the Czech Republic. The other is Josef Nuzík, who received the pallium in 2024 from the late Pope Francis.

Increasing teachers' salaries to 130% of the average wage in the Czech Republic would require boosting next year's education budget by CZK 35 billion, Daniel Münich of the IDEA think tank at CERGE-EI stated today.

According to Münich, bringing the education budget up to the average level of spending among member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) would require an additional CZK 40–50 billion. This year, the Ministry of Education is operating with an approved budget of CZK 284 billion. However, according to experts, next year's education budget should be at least CZK 334 billion. This amount corresponds to the share of gross domestic product that OECD countries spend on education on average.

Sunday night was probably the hottest of the current heatwave in Czechia, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute said on Monday.

Temperatures remained above 25 degrees Celsius at 12 weather stations, while nearly half of all stations recorded a tropical night, with temperatures staying above 20 degrees. The institute said the number of tropical nights has increased steadily over the past three days.

Monday is expected to bring another hot day, with highs of up to 39 degrees Celsius in Moravia and Silesia. Cooler weather is forecast later this week, with daytime temperatures dropping to around 25 degrees.
