Health Minister Vlastimil Válek will meet with doctors and health insurance company heads on Monday to discuss the technical details of a salary hike for doctors in Czech hospitals, which are now running in crisis mode to protest against low pay. Although Prime Minister Petr Fiala last week promised to allocate an extra 9.8 billion crowns to hospitals, questions have arisen as to how the increased funds from insurance payments would translate into doctors' salaries. Doctors say they will not call off the protests until a mechanism has been found to ensure their demands are met.

Thousands of people braved the cold to watch a reenactment of the Battle of Austerlitz, in which Napoleon's troops defeated the much larger Austro-Russian army in 1805 near Tvarožná in the Brno region. The historic reenactment, which takes place annually, was the largest since 2015 with over 1,200 history enthusiasts from 15 countries involved. While 218 years ago there was only a dusting of snow and frost on the battlefield, on Saturday the ground was covered with a heavy blanket of snow and the temperature was slightly below zero. According to the organisers, some 10,500 spectators watched the battle, which was a pleasant surprise given the cold weather and the problems on the roads.

The situation in Czech hospitals is reported to be under control, despite the fact that the vast majority of them are working in crisis-mode due to a protest strike by doctors over higher wages. Six thousand of them have refused to sign contracts on overtime, and are awaiting the outcome of Monday's meeting with the health minister. According to Czech Television, emergency care was provided in all hospitals and no problems were reported despite the heightened number of accidents due to the icy conditions.
