Employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio are set to go on a 24-hour strike over planned changes to the funding of public service media on Monday June 22, a spokesperson said on Friday.

The government is planning to do away with the licence fee system under which the stations are funded and place them under the state budget. Officials say the latter system is in place in many EU countries, but critics say the change could expose the broadcasters to political pressure.

The population of Czechia fell by almost 19,800 during the first quarter of 2026 to 10.896 million, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The decline was driven by both natural population decrease and net migration. Some 30,100 people died while only 17,500 children were born, continuing a five-year decline in birth rates. Migration also contributed to the drop, with about 36,500 people leaving the country and 29,200 arriving. The statistical office said the negative migration balance was largely linked to the expiry of temporary protection for many Ukrainian refugees.

The Czech Chamber of Deputies has advanced a government-backed amendment to the Building Act to its final reading after completing the second reading stage. The bill is intended to simplify and speed up the permitting process for new construction projects, including by creating a centralised state building authority and declaring large housing developments to be in the public interest. Lawmakers submitted around 130 amendment proposals, which will now be reviewed by the parliamentary Economic Committee before the final vote. Opposition parties continue to criticise both the substance of the reform and the decision to introduce it as a parliamentary rather than government bill.
