The Czech lower house is set to vote on the government’s austerity package on Friday morning, following a decision of the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday. However a debate on the measures – which are in their third and final reading – was still taking place on Wednesday afternoon. The session has been marked by criticism from the opposition, along with personal attacks.
According to the coalition government its austerity package, which includes an overhaul of the pension system, will help markedly reduce the state budget deficit in the coming years.

The Prague government is sending a second plane to bring back Czechs seeking to leave Israel following a Hamas attack on the country that began on Saturday. The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, announced the news early on Wednesday afternoon.
On Tuesday night Mr. Lipavský brought 34 Czechs back from Israel on a government plane after meeting top local officials on a surprise visit to the country.
The minister said further planes would be sent after the second one on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague has set up a help line for people seeking to return to Czechia from Israel.

President Petr Pavel’s latest candidate for Constitutional Court justice, Pavel Simon, will evidently not be appointed to the country’s highest court. Two separate Senate committees discussing the matter on Wednesday failed to support his candidacy; only one of five members of the Human Rights Committee backed him.
Mr. Simon is due to face a grilling in the upper house next week, with legislators reportedly planning to raise rulings of his that were overturned by the Constitutional Court, as well as his business activities and new age “school”.

The minister of industry and trade, Jozef Síkela, says attacks on him by a Czech newspaper owned by Daniel Křetínský should raise questions about how the billionaire entrepreneur uses his media assets in other states.
Mr. Síkela told the Financial Times on Wednesday that it was “strange” the daily Blesk had run stories critical of the government’s purchase of a gas pipeline operator that Mr. Křetínský had also bid for.
The businessman sold his stake in France’s Le Monde but still owns radio stations and magazines in the country. He is reportedly interested in buying the UK’s Daily Telegraph.

Sales of new hybrid cars in Czechia rose by 42 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2023 to nearly 30,000, according to data from the Car Importers Association released on Wednesday.
The number of plug-in hybrid cars sold went up by two-thirds compared to in the same period last year, while electric cars saw an increase in sales of 61 percent.

Ice hockey legend Jaromír Jágr, who is 51, has indicated that he may soon play again with Kladno, the Czech top flight club he owns. He said on social media that he needed to lose 10 kilos within two weeks to be able to take to the ice with Kladno.
Jágr’s last appearance in a competitive game was in April this year.
He is the second most productive player in NHL history and is widely considered the greatest Czech player ever.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s government will face a vote of no-confidence in the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, October 17, the ctk news agency reported. The vote will take place at the instigation of the leading opposition ANO party over the recent revelation that Interior Minister Vit Rakušan from the Mayors and Independents Party had used an encrypted mobile phone in 2021. According to ANO this suggests the minister had something to hide and may have had links to organized crime.
The minister says he used the phone briefly and only because he feared his office might be bugged. Both the prime minister and president say they see no reason for his dismissal.
The Fiala cabinet should easily survive the no-confidence motion, since it has a comfortable 108-seat majority in the lower house.

On his return from Israel, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said negotiations were underway to secure the repatriation of dozens of Czechs from the country since the capacity of commercial flights out of Israel had decreased.
Mr. Lipavský, who brought back 34 Czech nationals on a government flight on Tuesday, urged Czechs who have failed to get on a flight out of Israel to contact the Czech Embassy in Tel Aviv.
He said it was compiling a list of people interested in repatriation and the ministry would find ways to get them out of the country.
The ministry says 181 Czech nationals in Israel are presently registered on its travel data base DROZD.

The head of Czech diplomacy Jan Lipavsky, who held talks with top officials in Israel on Tuesday, brought home 34 Czech citizens, stranded in the country, on a government plane. The Czech Embassy in Tel Aviv is in contact with other Czech nationals who have expressed interest in repatriation. The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also coordinating the evacuation with other EU member states.
