Czechia is counting on sending an ambassador to Russia at some point in the future, President Petr Pavel said told reporters after Thursday’s meeting of top constitutional officials on foreign policy issues. The president said the first step would probably be to fill the post of deputy ambassador. The current ambassador to Russia, Vítězslav Pivoňka, was recalled home as relations worsened and has already been in Prague for several months. Diplomat Jiří Čistecký is now the country’s top representative in Moscow.
Earlier, President Pavel was more reserved on the issue of sending a new ambassador to Moscow, while Foreign Minister Lipavský argued the need to maintain dialogue with Russia even in difficult times. Now the president said the issue was not "if but when". The country’s top officials also agreed on the need to continue supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia.

The Czech Republic will not accept an offer from the American company Axiom to fly Czech astronaut Ales Svoboda into space, Václav Kobera, head of the Space Activities and Research Department at the Transport Ministry, told reporters. He said the reason is a lack of finances. The mission would cost around $60 million (CZK 1.35 billion) which the country can ill afford at the present time.

A Prague court has upheld the decision of a Prague elementary school to fire teacher Martina Bednářová for questioning Russian war crimes in class. Her dismissal was thus definitively confirmed by the Prague City Court. The teacher also faces charges of genocide denial for her statements in class about the war in Ukraine. A district court initially acquitted her on the grounds of freedom of speech, but the appeals chamber asked for the case to be reviewed in October.

People have been paying their respects to the late Karel Schwarzenberg, a member of the Czech nobility and one of the country’s most prominent post-1989 politicians, whose coffin has been put on display for the public at the Church of the Knights of Malta of Our Lady Beneath the Chain in central Prague. Close to 3,000 people came to bid him a last farewell on Wednesday. More people have been lining up outside the church today. The coffin will remain on display for the public until Friday.
The former foreign minister is to have a funeral with state honours at St. Vitus Cathedral on Saturday.
The funeral mass will be followed by a private funeral for family and friends at Orlík nad Vltavou Castle, after which Schwarzenberg’s remains will be placed to rest in the family tomb in the castle park.
Mr. Schwarzenberg passed away on November 12 in Vienna at the age of 85.

Defence ministers from the Visegrad Group ( Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary) are in the Czech Republic for a two-day summit. They will attend a ceremony at the National Memorial in Vítkov on Thursday before starting talks. On Friday, the meeting will be broadened to include representatives of Slovenia, Croatia and Austria, as well as delegates from a number of Western Balkan countries.

An exhibition marking 300 years since the death of the great architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel opens at the National Technical Museum in Prague on Thursday.
Called Santini and the World of His Architecture, the exhibition is linked to the Santini 2023 conference, held by the National Heritage Institute at the Prague Crossroads centre on Thursday.
The Prague-born architect of Italian origin is known for his Baroque Gothic style. Among his most famous works is the church of St John of Nepomuk on Zelená Hora near Žďár nad Sázavou, which is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

The volume of the Czech book market reached CZK 8.4 billion last year, a drop by three percent on the previous year, according to newly released data by the Czech Association of Booksellers and Publishers.
According to the annual report, Czechs spent around CZK 7.8 billion on printed books, which is the lowest figure in the last five years. In contrast, the market for e-books and audiobooks continues to grow.
Some 14,500 book titles were published in Czechia last year, which is roughly 300 more than in the previous year. The highest number of books, over 1,000, was published by the market leader Albatros Media.

Czech hand-made glass production has been added to the UNESCO world intangible cultural heritage list. The move was made at a UNESCO meeting currently taking place in Botswana.
The nomination was a collaborative effort prepared by six countries, including Czechia, France, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Spain.
Czechia already has nine items on the prestigious list, including the slovácký verbuňk dance, the Hlinecko region masopust (carnival) processions and masks, the South Bohemian Ride of the Kings tradition, puppeteering and glass-blown Christmas beads.

A Prague resident would need to spend the equivalent of 14.8 years of wages for a new, medium-size apartment (70 square metres), if having no other expenses, according to fresh data by property developer Central Group. That figure is 1.6 lower than a year ago and 1.8 lower than in the previous quarter.
About 5,000 flats are approved for construction in the Czech capital annually, which, according to Central Group, is only 50 percent of what the capital needs. Housing in Prague remains significantly less affordable than in most neighbouring metropolises.
According to the latest analysis by Skanska Residential, Trigema and Central Group developers, , the average price of a new flat sold in Czechia stands at CZK 146,459 per square meter.
