    In his first press briefing as newly-elected head of state, Petr Pavel thanked voters for coming to the polls is such large numbers.  Speaking at his campaign headquarters to a euphoric crowd shortly after the election results were announced, Mr. Pavel said that while he understands that some voters may be disappointed, he does not see winners and losers, but people who respect democracy and care about the future of the country. He promised to be a president for all citizens, work for the good of the country and bring decency, respect and humility to society.

    Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala congratulated Petr Pavel on his election victory calling it a victory of human decency, democracy and Western values. He said Mr. Pavel’s victory would give him a strong mandate and he looked forward to working with him from day one. Congratulations and words of support have also come from Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, Minister for EU affairs Mikuláš Bek and other members of the government and the Czech Parliament.

    Retired army general, Petr Pavel, has been elected the next president of Czechia. Mr. Pavel won the runoff against former prime minister Andrej Babiš, by the biggest margin ever in the history of Czech presidential elections. With  all votes counted, Petr Pavel got over 58.3 percent of the vote, his contestant received 41.6 percent.

    General Pavel, whose election motto was “order and stability” received strong backing from the unsuccessful contenders in the first round of elections held a fortnight ago. He also received support from Prime Minister Petr Fiala and the leaders of the other parties in the ruling coalition.

    Mr. Pavel will succeed the incumbent president, Miloš Zeman, and become the fourth president of Czechia. He is the second head of state to have been elected by popular vote.

    Voter turnout in the second round of elections reached a record high at just over 70 percent.

    The second round of voting was preceded by an aggressive and emotionally charged election campaign, which the prime minister described as “the worst in the country’s modern history”. He said he was greatly looking forward to cooperating with Petr Pavel and stressed the need for the newly-elected president to diffuse the tension and unite the nation.

    Votes are being counted in the second round of presidential elections to find a successor to President Miloš Zeman, whose second term in office ends on March 8. The two contenders for the top post are retired army general Petr Pavel and billionaire former prime minister Andrej Babiš.

    Early predictions suggest that Petr Pavel will win the elections by a large margin.

    The candidate elected will be Czechia’s fourth president and the second elected by popular vote.

    The result is expected between 3 and 4pm CET.

    Early reports from polling stations indicate a record turnout of around 70 percent in the second round of presidential elections. The turnout in the first round reached 68.2. The higher turnout in the second round is attributed to the aggressive and emotionally charged campaign which Prime Minister Petr Fiala described as “the worst in the country’s modern history”.

    The number of newly registered cases of Covid-19 infections in Czechia have risen by 15 percent in the last seven days compared to data from the previous week, according to the Ministry of Health. The number of infected people has increased despite a decrease in the number of tests conducted. However, the number of people hospitalized with Covid is reported to have decreased. Laboratories in Czechia registered over 1,900 Covid infections in the past seven days, compared to 1,700 the previous week. Over 3,300 people were tested, down eight per cent week-on-week.

    Prague City Hall has made a bid for Jindřišska Tower in the city centre, which the Prague Archbishopric has put up for sale for 75 million crowns, Jan Chabr, Prague city councilor for property, told Czech Radio. Some 30 other bidders have also shown an interest in acquiring the property. The tower is part of the historic core of the city which is on the UNESCO list of cultural and natural heritage. The 15th century building is almost 66 metres high and is equipped with an elevator. The ten floors of the tower house a restaurant, souvenir shop, café, gallery and a permanent exhibition. The tower is also used for cultural programs, exhibitions and theatre performances and concerts. The belfry, with its bell Maria from 1518, offers a panoramic view of the Prague skyline.

    The last group of Czech soldiers who served in the EU training mission in Mali on Friday received medals from Defense Minister Jana Černochová at a special ceremony at Prague's Vítkov Memorial. Czech soldiers were part of an EU task force that helped Mali fight Islamist militias. The EU countries taking part decided to withdraw the taskforce last year due to a lack of interest in maintaining the force on the part of the Mali leadership.

    A number of Czech websites were hacked on the first day of voting in the second round of presidential elections, the ctk news agency reported. The attacks are believed to have been the work of the Russian  No Name 057 group. Among the sites hit were the website of presidential candidate Petr Pavel and that of the Czech Foreign Ministry. Security experts say the attacks may continue over the weekend, targeting websites reporting on the election results.

    Polling stations around the country reopened at 8am on Saturday and will close at 2pm CET. The result is expected between 3 and 4pm.
