The ban on outdoor poultry farming, which was imposed by the State Veterinary Administration in mid-December due to the spread of bird flu, was lifted on Friday.

Veterinarians say the situation in Czechia as well as elsewhere in Europe has improved. At the same time, they have advised breeders to prevent contact with wild birds and observe other preventive measures.

The ban on outdoor poultry farming was issued following the largest outbreak of bird flu in the country to date, confirmed at a chicken farm in West Bohemia in December, which resulted in the culling of nearly 750,000 laying hens.

A parliament debate on a government proposal to lower the indexation of old age pensions in order to save public finances in the years to come has gone into its fourth day in the lower house. The opposition has been filibustering since Tuesday in an effort to delay the bill, but a vote on the controversial proposal is expected on Friday or Saturday.

Opposition parties are accusing the government of hurting the most vulnerable group of society and threaten to challenge the bill in the Constitutional Court if it is approved.

According to existing legislation a mandatory indexing of old-age pensions takes effect according to the given level of inflation, but inflation is now so high that the ruling parties say state coffers can no longer afford the burden. The ruling coalition needs to get the bill approved by both houses and signed into law by the president by March 22 for it to be able to take effect this year.

The Fiala government has revised its policy program after about 14 months in office. Prime Minister Petr Fiala justified the need for the revision citing major unexpected expenditures in connection with the war in Ukraine. The most important changes were made with regard to commitments concerning finances, energy and education. The prime minister said that since it was only a revision of the original program the government would not seek approval for it in the lower house. The move has been severely criticized by the opposition ANO and Freedom and Direct Democracy parties who say it is a sign of incompetence and chaos.
