Some 57 percent of primary schools and 63 percent of secondary schools in Czechia have dealt with at least one case of bullying among pupils over the past three years, according to a report by the Czech School Inspectorate released on Tuesday.

Compared to the last report carried out in the 2015/2016 school year, the number of cases have increased by ten percent at primary schools and by around three percent at secondary schools.

The most common forms of bullying among pupils include intimidation, slander as well as verbal bullying and cyberbullying. The report also mentions an increase in cases of teacher bullying.

According to the Chief School Inspector Tomáš Zatloukal, bullying is becoming increasingly widespread and needs to be addressed in a serious and systematic way.

Six newcomers are part of the Czech national football team nominated by coach Jaroslav Šilhavý for the two European championship qualifiers scheduled to be played in late March.

The Czech team will enter the qualification on March 24 with a home match against Poland, the toughest opponent in the five-team Group E, and will next face Moldova. The first two teams from each group will qualify for the championship, hosted by Germany next year.

The operating profit of car manufacturer Škoda Auto fell by 42 percent to EUR 628 million last year, the parent company Volkswagen announced in its report on Tuesday. At the same time, sales increased by 18.5 percent to 21 billion euros. The drop in profit was caused by the war in Ukraine, but also by higher costs and unfavourable exchange rates.

Škoda Auto employs 45,000 people worldwide. In addition to Czechia, it has plants in China, Slovakia and India, as well as in Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Last year it announced that it was entering the Vietnamese market. In February 2022, Volkswagen Group decided to stop production in Russia and exports to Russia indefinitely due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Charles University lecturers in the humanities and social sciences are considering striking or suing the university over low wages. They point to an abysmal wage gap across faculties, arguing that while in the sphere of exact sciences, professors' salaries exceed 100,000 crowns, those in the humanities and social sciences do not even receive the average wage in Czechia. An increasing number of employees are joining the unions and calling for protest action. The Education Ministry has promised to deal with the complaint and has set up a special commission to look into the matter.

Students of the Faculty of Economics have called a demonstration for Wednesday demanding the resignation of the faculty’s dean, Miroslav Ševčík, over his controversial behaviour. If he fails to do so, they intend to appeal to the faculty’s Academic Senate.

The rector of the Prague University of Economics and Business, Petr Dvořák, on Tuesday called on the academic senate of his university to remove Mr. Ševčík from the office. Otherwise, he said he would initiate the impeachment proceedings himself.

Ševčík, who rejected the allegation that he had been among those who tried to storm the building of the National Museum, has asked the rector for more time to decide whether he will resign.
