    During the past winter, Czechia fulfilled the EU target of saving at least 5% electricity during peak consumption periods, Jan Hamrník, spokesman for the Energy Regulatory Office told the ctk news agency on Monday.  The total savings during the peak consumption hours from December till March were 6.5 percent.

    The police have filed charges in connection with the tragic death of a four-year-old child in the town of Most. The boy was accidentally stabbed in the neck when a fight broke out between two men, one of whom was holding the child in his arms. The child bled to death despite the speedy arrival of paramedics on the scene. The 31-year-old attacker was charged with attempted murder and manslaughter. The prosecutor wants him remanded in custody.

    Czech Post is negotiating with the three hundred municipalities in which its branches are due to close as of July in order to find a viable solution for local residents. Following complaints from local mayors the state-owned company is now offering them the opportunity to join the Post Partner scheme under better conditions than in the past. The cost of the undertaking will be shared between the post office and the operator. Over 800 of the current 3,200 post office branches are now operated within the Post Partner scheme. Most often they are operated by village shops in the form of a single counter.

    Writer, translator and former diplomat, Michael Žantovský has announced that he will leave his post as head of the the Václav Havel Library on June 1. He has led the institution, which looks after the intellectual, literary and political legacy of playwright and former president Václav Havel, since September 2015. Žantovský did not say who would replace him at the head of the library and gave no reason for his departure.

    Pastors of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren will be able to officially bless same-sex unions if they wish to do so, the spokesman for the church Jiří Hofman said in a press release. The synod approved the decision at a three-day conference in Prague. The church leadership concluded that although there is not full agreement within the church on this matter the clergy should have the right to make their own decision. The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren is the second church in Czechia to allow the blessing of same-sex couples, after the Old Catholic Church.

    A total of 10 people died in traffic accidents in Czechia on Saturday and Sunday, making it the most tragic weekend on Czech roads so far this year.

    On Saturday, five people were killed in car-related accidents and the same number of people died on the roads on Sunday.

    A total of 36 people have died in road accidents so far this May, which is still lower than in the same period last year.

    Less than a third of the population is satisfied with the way democracy is working in Czechia and only 18 percent of Czechs believe that politicians listen to the opinions of ordinary people, suggests a survey carried out by Ipsos agency in cooperation with the Central European Digital Media Observatory.

    According to the survey, some 31 percent of Czechs are satisfied with the functioning of democracy in the country, while 42 percent thought democracy wasn’t functioning well. The remaining 27 percent of respondents said they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.

    The Czech weather office has extended a fire warning to most parts of Czechia, with the exception of south and north-east Bohemia, in reaction to especially dry conditions in the coming days.

    In line with the warning, people should refrain from building campfires, smoking or heating meals on portable cookers out in the open.

    According to the weekly weather forecast, daytime temperatures during next week will be hovering around 25 degrees Celsius, with no rain until next weekend.
