Czechia's biggest funfair Matějská pouť got underway at Prague’s exhibition grounds in Holešovice on Saturday. Originally a pilgrimage to the nearby church of St Matthew dating back to 1595, the fair now offers over 100 attractions including Airborne, the highest flying carousel in Europe with 65 meters and a giant Ferris wheel.
In the past years, the event attracted between 100,000 and 200,000 visitors annually. The highest attendance, over 215,000 visitors, was recorded in 2011.

Thousands of Czechs marked the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine with commemorative events, marches, rallies and fundraisers taking place all around the country on Saturday.
In Prague, thousands of people gathered on Old Town Square on Saturday afternoon to support the Ukrainian struggle against Russian aggression.
President Petr Pavel held an opening speech, in which he said the goal of the war was not to defeat Russia, but to get it out of Ukraine and allow it to develop freely. According to the president, the West has no choice but to support Ukraine if it doesn’t want Vladimir Putin's vision of the world to prevail.
Apart from thanking the volunteers, Mr. Pavel also expressed pride that Czechia was among the first to start helping Ukraine with arms and ammunition supplies. The participants of the event observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the war in Ukraine
The day culminated with a concert at Prague’s Forum Karlín, which got underway after 5 p.m. The proceeds of the concert will be used for the purchase of medical equipment for the Ukrainian army.
Commemorative events and meetings were also held in other Czech towns and cities, including Brno, Olomouc, Pilsen, Litoměřice and České Budějovice.

Czech tennis player Jakub Menšík defeated Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to become the youngest player to reach the final of the Qatar Open in Doha. The 18 year-old Czech reached his maiden ATP Tour final within one hour and 38 minutes. The Czech teenager, who beat UK’s Andy Murray earlier this week, will face Russian Karen Khachanov in Saturday’s final.

Over two-thirds of Czechs would support a quick end to the war in Ukraine, even at the cost of Russia keeping part of Ukraine's territory, according to a survey by the STEM agency. The percentage of people who would support an end to the conflict even at this price has increased slightly since last year. However, according to the same survey, the majority of Czechs still support Ukrainian refugees staying in their country.

The public prosecutor has accepted two of the five appeals against the initiation of criminal proceedings in the case of the Ještěd cable car accident, the Czech News Agency reported on Friday. Three people still remain accused of general endangerment due to negligence and face three to eight years in prison if found guilty. The investigation is still ongoing.
The accident happened on October 31, 2021, when the cable car on Ještěd mountain near Liberec fell from a height of 30 metres, killing the operator, who was alone in the cabin, on impact.

Activists from the pro-democracy direct action group Kaputin painted the Ukrainian flag on the ground in front of some Russian-owned apartment buildings in Prague on Friday to protest against Russia's war in Ukraine, on the eve of the two-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion. Some of the Russian tenants shouted at the activists from their windows and balconies, calling them Nazis, and one tenant threw an egg at them. Another tenant subsequently walked over the flag. The demonstration was attended by the police.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is helping with the inquiry into December's shooting at Charles University in Prague, FBI director Christopher Wray told Lidové noviny in an interview. The FBI chief was in Prague this week to meet with Interior Minister Vít Rakušan on Thursday. During his visit he expressed his condolences for the victims of the shooting at the Faculty of Arts, during which a lone gunman killed 14 people and then himself and injured 25 others.

Czechia is leading a Europe-wide campaign to collect USD 1.5 billion to buy ammunition for Ukraine from outside the EU, the Financial Times reported on Friday. The newspaper writes that Czechia is spearheading the initiative to compensate for the congressional deadlock on US aid and delays in European production.
Czech President Petr Pavel already announced the plan to buy artillery shells for Ukraine from so-called third countries at the Munich Security Conference last week, but the Financial Times has newly revealed the amount of money Czechia is calling for, citing unnamed sources.

Former US president Bill Clinton is due to visit Prague in March at the invitation of President Petr Pavel. Mr. Clinton will be one of the keynote speakers at a conference entitled Our Security Is Not a Given, the organizers of the event said on Friday. Clinton last visited the Czech capital in 2011 to attend the funeral of Václav Havel.
The conference, which will mark the 25th anniversary of Czechia's accession to NATO, will take place on March 12 in the Spanish Hall of Prague Castle. It will be attended by top Czech officials and foreign guests, among them former NATO secretary general George Robertson.
