    The traditional Night Run for Světluška, an annual event in support of people with visual impairments, will take place in seven cities around Czechia this year. People can sign up for the run in Ostrava, Plzen, Brno, Olomouc, Prague, České Budějovice and Jihlava. For this year's campaign, Světluška has chosen the motto "And how do you see it?" to draw attention to the issue of visual impairment and encourage people to participate. People can register at www.behprosvetlusku.cz. The entry fee, which goes in support of the cause, is five hundred crowns.

    Several hundred Czech farmers will join their European counterparts in protesting against high energy costs, cheap goods from Ukraine, stifling bureaucracy and the European Union's Green Deal at a number of border crossings on Thursday.  In the South Bohemia region, about three hundred tractors and other agricultural machinery will set off for the border in the early morning hours slowing down traffic and farmers reportedly plan to briefly block the Czech-German border crossing  in Strážne in the Prachatice region and the border crossing to Austria in Dolní Dvořiště.

    Hundreds of Czech farmers drove their tractors into central Prague at the start of the week, but the Agricultural Chamber and several other farmers’ organizations distanced themselves from the protest, saying it had been hijacked by pro-Russian and anti-government figures.

    President Petr Pavel on Wednesday received the president of Angola, Joao Lourenco, at Prague Castle. The two sides discussed international security, bilateral ties and possible areas of cooperation, among others in the field of security, aviation and transport, smart agriculture, mining and tourism.

    Czech and Angolan representatives also signed a memorandum of understanding on policy consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries. This should be followed up by contracts on mutual cooperation, protection and promotion of investments, or on the avoidance of double taxation.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský on Wednesday summoned the Russian ambassador to the Czech Republic, Alexander Zmejewski, over the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a Siberian prison. According to foreign ministry spokesman, Daniel Drake, the ambassador was summoned to explain the circumstances of Navalny’s death and the authorities’ refusal to hand over the body to his family.  A number of European countries have summoned their Russian ambassadors in connection with the case, including Germany, Britain, Italy and Poland.

    Work on transforming Prague's Jiřího z Poděbrad square started on Tuesday. The reconstruction which aims to create an open green space where people can sit on the grass, on benches under the shade of trees or shop at open markets, will take close to three years and cost approximately half a billion crowns. The project should be completed in the autumn of 2026. The square should remain partly open throughout the reconstruction work with the fencing being moved as needed.

    The deadline for electronic applications to secondary schools, which was due to expire at midnight on Tuesday, has been extended by 24 hour hours in order to make up for the delay in the launch of the application process due to technical problems. The number of applications has already surpassed expectations. According to Cermat, the organization operating the app, 142,000 young people have already filed applications to secondary schools. Entrance exams will be held in the first half of April.

    Czech authorities on Wednesday handed over to a US police escort at Prague airport Georgian national Polad Omarov, who is suspected of a number of crimes, including plotting the murder of an Iranian journalist in New York. The man was detained last January by specialists from the rapid deployment unit in Prague. Justice Minister Pavel Blažek approved his extradition and although Omarov appealed the decision it was upheld by the Constitutional Court.

    The European Union on Wednesday approved its 13th package of sanctions against Russia over its war on Ukraine. The package, which will expand the existing sanctions to 200 more people, companies and institutions, is expected to be formally approved in time for the second anniversary of the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. According to Czech diplomatic sources it stopps short of the Czech proposal to restrict the movement of Russian diplomats to the host state within Schengen and accept only biometric passports, which are more difficult to forge.

    Meanwhile, The Czech government is expected to extend indefinitely a ban on the issuance of new visas and residence permits to Russian and Belarussian nationals on Wednesday. The ban, which was introduced in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is valid until March 31 of this year. The ban does not apply to humanitarian cases, foreigners who already have a residence permit in the country or applications for short-stay visas if the applicant is a family member of a Czech citizen or a citizen of the European Union.

    The first Czech tennis player to win in Wednesday's round of 16 in Dubai is Markéta Vondroušová. She beat the Russian Ljudmila Samsonova 6:2 6:2 in the third round of the WTA tournament in the United Arab Emirates. The 24-year-old will now face either the Romanian Sorana Cirstea or the Croatian Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals.
