Sparta Prague lost 1:6 away against Liverpool in Thursday night's second leg of the round of 16 Europa League game, European football’s second-tier club competition. The Prague team have thus been eliminated from the tournament. The Czech title-holders had already lost the first leg 1:5 in Prague last week, so their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals were already considered to be extremely low.

The human rights advocacy group Voice Against Violence has called on MPs in an open letter to continue discussing the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and to support its ratification. They say that the recent rejection of the convention by the Senate should not be a reason to stop the ratification process. The letter has the support of 50 Czech organizations.

In January, the Senate narrowly failed to approve the Istanbul Convention, thereby making Czechia one of the few European states to sign but not ratify the convention. The lower house was also meant to vote on the document, but given the Senate's position, it is unlikely to discuss it.

Czechia and the Philippines are aligned in their assessments of the international security situation, President Petr Pavel said after meeting with the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in Prague on Thursday. He added that the Czech Republic is fully on the side of the Philippines when it comes to the country's claim to the free movement of goods and maritime transport in the South China Sea.

Mr. Pavel also noted that Czechia is struggling with a labour shortage and that the Philippines is one of their priority countries for workers to come and fill the gap. In December, the Czech government approved a regulation that will increase the limit for business visa applications from 5,000 to 10,300 in the case of the Philippines from May.

President Marcos said the countries can increase their cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, energy, aviation, defence and cyber security. Czech Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný will soon be visiting the Philippines with a business delegation.

The Philippine president is in Prague to discuss cooperation between the two countries and will open the Czech-Philippine Business Forum with his Czech counterpart on Friday. He also has planned meetings with Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the head of the Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, and the Speaker of the lower house, Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

Some 477 new cases of whooping cough were registered in Czechia between Monday and Wednesday morning, with the total number of cases this year already reaching 2750. This is the highest number of registered cases of the infectious disease in the country in a single calendar year since the 1960s.

However, Deputy Health Minister Josef Pavlovic said that neither whooping cough nor any of the other infectious diseases that have been on the rise in Czechia recently, such as tuberculosis and diphtheria, are close to reaching epidemic levels yet. He also said that the country has sufficient amounts of the necessary medicines and vaccines. According to the director of the Department of Public Health Protection, Matyáš Fošum, the manufacturer of the whooping cough vaccine for children has reported a shortage, but 10,000 doses will be imported from the UK next week.

A new opinion poll by the Median agency suggests that ANO would receive 31 percent of the votes in a general election held in February. The Civic Democrats would come second, on 12.5 percent, and the Pirates would be third, on 11 percent, the survey indicates.

A poll by Kantar published at the weekend suggested opposition leaders ANO enjoyed a record 39 percent support.

Some 9.5 percent of respondents in the Median poll said they would back the anti-EU Freedom and Direct Democracy party.

The Mayors party placed fifth on 9 percent, an increase on recent surveys. Its leader has recently been holding a series of “uncensored” public meetings around the country.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is due to come to Czechia next Wednesday, a day before a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Visegrad Four states. Mr. Sikorski will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart, Jan Lipavský, on March 20.

There are disagreements between the V4 countries on some foreign policy issues, with Poland and Czechia at present being more clearly pro-Western than Slovakia and Hungary, and a bilateral meeting between the Czech and Polish prime ministers was also held before a summit in February.
