Following Saturday’s March of Solidarity with Belarus, two further events that will voice their support with demonstrators in the Eastern European state who are voicing their distrust of the official results of last week’s presidential elections which saw the incumbent head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, win by a landslide.
In Prague, protestors are set to gather at 6pm this Sunday on Old Town Square, among them politicians from the Czech and European Parliaments, who will speak at the event. At the same time, a protest is also planned in the Moravian city of Brno.

A third of working Czechs have seen their income fall since the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic first appeared in the country, a survey conducted by the agency STEM/MARK on behalf of consulting firm Ernst and Young shows. A quarter of respondents, questioned between June and July, said that their lives have changed fundamentally due to the coronavirus, but 69 percent said that they are not experiencing severe difficulties.
More than a half of respondents said that they are now more watchful about their personal hygiene and 35 percent said that they have had to limit or cut spending on leisure activities such as holidays, or the purchasing of expensive products.

On Saturday 197 new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus were registered in the Czech Republic, the second lowest increase this week, Health Ministry data shows. However, this may be due to the fact that fewer tests are conducted in laboratories over the weekend. So far, 19,891 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic hit the country. Out of this number, 5,733 people are still fighting the virus.

Around 400 people marched through the centre of Prague to the building of the Ministry of Foreign affairs to show their solidarity with anti-regime protesters in Belarus, organisers of the Prague rally say.
The march, which began at the Klementinum building on the eastern bank of the river Vltava, was led over Charles Bridge and then through the Hradčanská neighbourhood, before culminating at the Czernin Palace which houses the Foreign Ministry.
Members of the Pirate Party and of the Million Moments for Democracy group, which is known for organising last year’s huge anti-government protests, also attended and spoke at the event. At a speech delivered in front of the Foreign Ministry, Benjamin Roll, one of the leaders of Million Moments for Democracy, said that there are dark but also hopeful parallels between Czech and Belarusian history. He urged the protestors in Belarus not to let themselves be broken.
The event was also attended by individuals carrying signs in support of President Alexander Lukashenko, who is currently the target of protests in his home country due to the allegedly fraudulent election that saw him win in a landslide with 80 percent of the vote.

Plzeň City Hall has decided to fly the historic white-red-white flag of Belarus on the city’s central Republic square, the Czech News Agency reported on Saturday. The flag was put up by Plzeň Mayor Martin Baxa and his deputy, Michal Vozuble, in support of the citizens of Belarus protesting the results of last week’s presidential election in the country. Mayor Baxa said the flag will fly for a week.
Plzeň follows Brno in the decision to fly the historic flag of Belarus after the Moravian city decided to do so on Friday.

Seven Czech institutions of higher learning have made it onto the list of the ARWU Academic Ranking of World Universities, one of the most prestigious tertiary education rankings in the world. Charles University fared best, ranking between the shared 201 to 300 spots.
Other Czech institutions that made it onto the list are the Palacký University in Olomouc (501-600), the Masaryk University in Brno (601-700), the Czeh Technical University in Prague (701-800), the Czech University of Life Sciences (801-900) and the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague (901-1000).
The ARWU rankings are especially focused around the scientific and research contributions of universities. Harvard University again topped the list this year, with Stanford University and Cambridge University takind second and third place.

Storms are expected to hit the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon and in the evening, with local hailstorms and torrential rains of up to 45 millimeters possibly breaking out across the country with the exception of the Moravian-Silesian Region, as well as the districts of Šumperk and Jeseník. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a warning, saying that some smaller rivers and streams could overflow and tree branches break.

EU foreign ministers agreed that the union will place sanctions on Belarusian leaders responsible for the violent crackdown on protesters and the undemocratic nature of the country’s presidential elections, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Tomáš Petříček tweeted on Friday evening after a special video conference was held on the subject.
Mr. Petříček said a list of names of those responsible should now be prepared and that the European Commission has been tasked with increasing support for civil society in Belarus.

The number of newly registered cases of COVID-19 in the Czech Republic on Friday reached 293, according to data on the website of the Ministry of Health. That is 36 cases fewer than were discovered on Thursday.
A total of 19,693 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the Czech Republic since the pandemic reached the country. Around 70 percent of patients have since recovered, while 394 have died. The amount of people currently fighting the virus, some 5,567, is at a record high.
