The Czech Republic looks set to contribute nearly CZK 100 million to a joint migration project organised by the Visegrad Four, Germany and Morocco, the Czech News Agency reported on Saturday. The money would be sent in two donations, according to a paper prepared by the ministries of foreign affairs and interior set to be discussed by the Czech cabinet on Monday.

The Visegrad Four (CR, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary) and Germany agreed to provide aid to Morocco as a source and transit country for illegal migration at a summit in Bratislava in February. Nearly CZK 800 million in total will be put into the project.

An annual fund-raising event entitled Run for Paměť národa (Memory of Nation) took place at a number of locations in the Czech Republic, including Prague’s Hvězda (Star) Game Reserve, on Saturday. The money generated goes towards Paměť národa’s endeavours in recording interviews with eye-witnesses to major events in the Czech Republic’s modern history.

The project’s subjects have frequently included war veterans, victims of the Nazis and political prisoners from the country’s Communist era.

Some 1,447 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in the Czech Republic on Friday, the highest number for one day since the pandemic began. It was the fourth day in succession that over 1,000 cases were detected in the country. The number of people known to have the virus at present is 12,260, which is also the largest number since the first cases were detected. The number of coronavirus patients in hospital is 264.

Five other districts, most in Central Bohemia, have joined Prague in being categorised as medium risk on a national “Covid map”.

On Thursday it became compulsory to wear face masks indoors in the whole of the Czech Republic.

Prague is no longer the only Czech region designated a “medium-risk” or “orange” zone for contracting the coronavirus under the nation’s so-called traffic light map system. On Friday, government health officials designated five additional districts at that level.

Four of the newly “orange” districts – Beroun, Kladno, Kolín, Prague-East – are in Central Bohemia while one, Uherské Hradiště, is in southern Moravia.  There opening hours of catering facilities (restaurants, bars and cafés, etc.) will be limited as of Monday, September 14. As in Prague now, restaurants and bars must also be closed between midnight and 6 a.m.

A record 1,382 new cases of coronavirus were detected in the Czech Republic on Thursday, the third day this week with numbers exceeding the 1,100 mark, according to Ministry of Health data. In recent weeks, the country has registered higher growth in Covid-19 cases than have all but seven of 55 European countries.

The population of the Czech Republic increased by 5,200 people in the first half of this year to reach 10.699 million, a rate of growth significantly lower than in previous years, according to the Czech Statistical Office.

The lower year-on-year population increase was mainly due to a lower net migration, but partly also due to a more significant natural decrease. The number of deaths in the first half of 2020 exceeded the number of live births by 3,100.

A total of 53,800 children were born alive in the months of January to June, almost 1,900 fewer than in the first half of 2019. The decline reflects changes in the age structure, when the numerically weak generations of women born in the 1990s have been moving to the age of highest fertility.

According to preliminary data, a total of 26,400 people immigrated to the Czech Republic in the first half of 2020, which was by 5,700 fewer in annual terms. Meanwhile, the number of emigrants increased by 7,000 to 18,100 during the period.

The number of marriages and divorces dropped significantly in the Czech Republic this spring, data released on Friday by the Czech Statistical Office show, as the coronavirus epidemic and related restrictions disrupted people’s life plans.

The Czech Republic was in a declared state of emergency from 12 March to 17 May. At the time of the imposed restrictions, only small weddings could take place and guests were required to wear veils. Restaurants that would normally host receptions were also closed for several weeks, and the functioning of offices or courts was limited.

As a result, March saw the fewest marriages for that month in more than 100 years. From April to June, there were about half as many weddings in annual terms. According to an estimate by of Trinity Bank chief economist Lukáš Kovanda, a member of the National Economic Council of the Government (NERV), the "wedding industry" has lost some 1.23 billion crowns in revenue due to the coronavirus.

Although the majority of people testing positive for the virus are asymptomatic, in recent days hundreds of others have been hospitalized, about one-quarter of them in serious condition. The Czech Republic currently has 11,178 coronavirus patients, another record number.

Due to the uptick, as of 10 September, with a few exceptions, it is again mandatory nationwide to wear facemasks inside public buildings of all types, as well as on public transport, in taxis, and at the airport as previously mandated. However, businesses, including restaurants and bars, remain open.

Belgium and Germany this week placed Prague on the "red lists" on risky travel destinations while Denmark will place the entire Czech Republic on its list of risky countries as of Saturday.
