A Czech climber in his 40s was killed by falling rocks in the French Alps on Thursday while climbing Mont Blanc, French media reported. The Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed the death.
The accident happened near Saint-Gervais in the Haute-Savoie region, on a section of the popular route between the Tête Rousse and Goûter mountain huts. The climber fell several dozen metres after being struck by rocks. His companion was unharmed and called for help, but rescuers were unable to revive the Czech man.
The area is known for frequent rockfalls and is considered one of the most dangerous parts of the classic Mont Blanc route. Two other Czech climbers died in the same area in July after being hit by falling rocks.

Opposition representatives from the Civic Democrats (ODS) and TOP 09 have criticised a meeting between Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Tomio Okamura and Iranian Ambassador Seyed Majid Ghafeleh Bashi, saying it could threaten Czech security. They pointed to Iran’s decision in August to list Prague-based Radio Farda among its military targets.
Okamura said the meeting, held at Iran’s request, focused on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. ODS leader Martin Kupka, TOP 09 leader Matěj Ondřej Havel and ODS MP Jan Lipavský all criticised the meeting and Okamura’s approach to Iran.
Iranian armed forces listed Radio Farda among several foreign Persian-language media outlets as military targets in August, accusing them of links to US and Israeli intelligence. The Czech Foreign Ministry subsequently summoned the Iranian ambassador and said the threat was unacceptable.

Almost nine in ten young Czechs either already live independently or plan to move out of their parents’ home by the age of 30, a survey by investment platform Portu suggests, published on Saturday. Conducted by Ipsos among 840 people, the survey found that more than 21 percent of those aged 16 to 25 already live away from their parents.
Another 12 percent plan to move out after secondary school, 40 percent after university and 15 percent by the age of 30. According to Eurostat, Czechs leave home slightly earlier than the EU average. In 2024, the average age was 25.8 in Czechia, compared with 26.2 across the EU.
Living independently can be expensive, however. Renting a two-room flat in Prague for around CZK 25,000 a month could require more than CZK 100,000 upfront, including a deposit and agency fee.

Czech lower house deputy speaker Barbora Urbanová of the STAN party has visited Kyiv, where she met with Ukrainian parliament deputy speaker Olena Kondratiuk, the Ukrainian parliament said on Friday. Urbanová had originally sought approval for the trip from the Czech lower house’s organising committee, but it was rejected.
The visit comes as the government of ANO, SPD and the Motorists has refused to provide money for weapons for Ukraine and does not contribute to the Czech ammunition initiative, although it has allowed the programme to continue.
Kondratiuk thanked Czechia for its support since Russia’s invasion began in 2022, including its leadership of the ammunition initiative. She said Ukraine is counting on the initiative continuing.

Siniaková currently leads the doubles world rankings by 1,915 points ahead of Townsend. She remains in contention to become the first player in history to finish a season as world number one in doubles for the sixth time.
Even Martina Navrátilová, one of the greatest doubles players of all time, never achieved that feat, although she won 31 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles.

The Prague 1 District Court has rehabilitated six dissidents who were unlawfully detained for short periods in the 1980s. Those rehabilitated are Civic Dmocratic Party Senator and Deputy Senate Speaker Jiří Oberfalzer, former environment minister Ivan Dejmal, former diplomat Markéta Fialková, neurologist and former head of the Society for Medical Ethics Jan Payne, antiquarian and gallery owner Jan Placák, and political activist and co-founder of the Šalamoun association John Bok.
The six were detained by police on suspicion of offences including incitement and disorderly conduct, but the court concluded that their detention was within the existing unlawful harassment of people who did not identify with the regime of the time.
