Proposed changes to licence fees could be devastating for Czech Television, according to Karel Novák, chairman of the broadcaster’s supervisory council. Novák warned the public broadcaster could face insolvency and has called an extraordinary council meeting for April 8 to discuss the issue with management.
He was responding to remarks by lower house speaker and SPD leader Tomio Okamura, who said the ruling coalition planned to abolish licence fees for selected groups including seniors over 75, companies, young people under 26, and people with disabilities as of mid-2026, which would slash Czech TV's income by a third.
Although the proposal has not yet been formally submitted, Novák said it cannot be ignored since, if adopted, it would have a devastating impact on Czech Television.

Proposed changes to the funding of public service media in the Czech Republic could threaten the stability and independence of Czech Television and Czech Radio, according to the European Broadcasting Union and 11 other international organisations. In a joint statement on Thursday, the signatories said major changes should be subject to broad expert debate and comply with European standards.
The coalition government of ANO, SPD and the Motorists plans to change the financing of public media by gradually replacing licence fees with money from the state budget.
The EBU said it was ready to contribute to consultations. It added that at a time when reliable information is more important than ever, Czech public service media must have stable, adequate and predictable funding, along with guarantees of independence in line with European standards, including the European Media Freedom Act.

Church representatives, accompanied by legal and forensic experts, exhumed an urn containing the remains of priest Václav Drbola at a cemetery in Starovičky in the Břeclav region on Thursday.
Drbola, who was executed during the communist regime, is set to be beatified. The process began with a ceremony in the Church of St Catherine before the urn was retrieved from the grave. Officials later confirmed the urn contained Drbola’s remains.
Drbola was executed by the communist authorities in August 1951 and later cremated. His ashes were meant to disappear without a trace, but funeral workers secretly preserved the urn. It was handed to his relatives during the Prague Spring and placed in a family grave in the 1980s.

A court in Chelyabinsk has banned the distribution of the Oscar-winning documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin in Russia, according to the independent outlet Mediazona, citing its reporter in the courtroom. Only the plaintiff’s side was represented at the hearing, while Russia’s state news agency TASS later reported on the ruling.
The Czech-Danish co-production, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, examines the spread of wartime propaganda in Russian schools during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Prosecutors argued the film depicts “general militarisation” and expresses a “negative attitude” toward the “special military operation”, the term Moscow uses for its invasion of Ukraine. They also said the film is directed against the current Russian regime. Much of the footage was filmed by director and documentary participant Pavel Talankin, a former teacher in the town of Karabash in the Chelyabinsk region.
