Around 400 people marched through the centre of Prague to the building of the Ministry of Foreign affairs to show their solidarity with anti-regime protesters in Belarus, organisers of the Prague rally say.
The march, which began at the Klementinum building on the eastern bank of the river Vltava, was led over Charles Bridge and then through the Hradčanská neighbourhood, before culminating at the Czernin Palace which houses the Foreign Ministry.
Members of the Pirate Party and of the Million Moments for Democracy group, which is known for organising last year’s huge anti-government protests, also attended and spoke at the event. At a speech delivered in front of the Foreign Ministry, Benjamin Roll, one of the leaders of Million Moments for Democracy, said that there are dark but also hopeful parallels between Czech and Belarusian history. He urged the protestors in Belarus not to let themselves be broken.
The event was also attended by individuals carrying signs in support of President Alexander Lukashenko, who is currently the target of protests in his home country due to the allegedly fraudulent election that saw him win in a landslide with 80 percent of the vote.

Around 20 historic planes were supposed to arrive at Prague’s Ruzyně airport this Saturday, as part of celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the return of Czechoslovak pilots from the United Kingdom to their home country after the end of World War Two. However, organisers were forced to cancel the planned landing due to bad weather, the Czech News Agency reports.
Among the planes were also many Czechoslovak aircraft, such as the Sokol M-1D, Aero Ae 145 and the L-200 Morava. Other aircraft were of American design, such as the T-6 Texan and the DHC-2 Beaver.
Czechoslovak pilots who had been fighting on the allied side during the conflict were gradually returning home in 1945, but on August 13 of that year 54 pilots returned at home once with their spitfires and enthusiasts have chosen to launch the commemorative events at around this time.

Cardinal and Archbishop of Prague Dominik Duka blessed the Marian Column on Old Town Square on Saturday, as hundreds of people from the ranks of supporters and opponents of the historic replica gathered on the the square. The majority of those gathered took part in a public prayer, while others held signs opposing the column nearby. Police were present at the location. Duka’s blessing was preceeded by a service held in the nearby Church of Our Lady before Týn.
The Marian column is considered an important Baroque work of art by its proponents, but opponents see it as a symbol of Habsburg rule and forced catholicization of the country after the 30 Years War. The column was destroyed by a mob 102 years ago, after Czechoslovakia gained independence from the Habsburg Empire, but was reinstated earlier this year.
