A memorial service was held at the former village of Ležáky in East Bohemia on Sunday, marking the 82nd anniversary of its annihilation by the Nazis. Among those who took part were President Petr Pavel and representatives of both houses of Parliament, ministries and the diplomatic community.

The event included a mass, the laying of wreathes and the reading out of victims’ names. A children’s choir performed and the national anthem was played.

The atrocity, which took place on June 24, 1942, came in retaliation for the killing of Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich and followed the similar destruction of Lidice near Prague. When the Gestapo discovered that the parachutists sent to assassinate Heydrich had kept a radio transmitter in Ležáky they murdered 51 of its residents.

Czech national soccer team manager Ivan Hašek says he is confident his charges’ luck will change in their third and final group game, against Turkey on Wednesday. The Czechs have lost to Portugal and were held to a 1:1 draw by Georgia, leaving them with only one point so far.

Hašek, who is 60, said the German referee in Saturday’s clash with Georgia had generally ruled in the Georgians’ favour in 50-50 situations and had been overly quick to hand out yellow cards.

The coach also said the atmosphere at the championship in Germany – where many Czech fans have been attending games – could help Czechia get the necessary result against Turkey.

The Czech foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, says candidates to join the European Union should be accepted as members on a one-by-one basis. While at the annual Europa-Forum Wachau at Göttweig Abbey in Lower Austria, Mr. Lipavský told the APA news agency that he was in favour of an approach where candidate states competed with one another in terms of meeting accession criteria.

The Czech foreign policy chief said simultaneous accession would put a break on the most ready candidates.

He said Ukraine was a special case, having been attacked by Russia. The country has decided for democracy and a European style of life and therefore merits all support from EU members, he said.
