Czechia has improved its position in the global corruption perceptions index compiled by international organisation Transparency International, climbing to 39th place from 46th in the previous ranking. Slovakia, by contrast, slipped further down the list. The annual report, covering 182 countries, once again puts top scores to Denmark, Finland and Singapore. Despite Czechia’s progress, its score remains below the average for European Union member states, a point highlighted by TI’s Czech chapter in its reaction to the results.

Companies from Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary will be allowed to take part in defence contracts financed by an EU loan for Ukraine, despite the three countries refusing to guarantee the €90 billion loan, diplomatic and EU sources told Czech Press Agency. The European Commission decided the contracts must remain open to firms from across the EU and Ukraine to avoid distorting the bloc’s internal market. EU leaders approved the loan for 2026–27 after failing to agree on using frozen Russian assets. Ukraine will be able to use up to €60 billion for defence investments and military purchases.

The unemployment rate in Czechia rose to 5.1 percent in January from 4.8 percent in December, according to the Labour Office. Compared with January last year, the share of unemployed increased by 0.8 percentage points. Analysts say the month-on-month rise was driven mainly by seasonal factors and changes to unemployment benefits, which now provide higher support in the first months. A total of 378,547 people were without work at the end of January, about 24,000 more than a month earlier. In the longer term, analysts link rising unemployment to weak performance in Czech industry.
