Diesel prices in Czechia have risen sharply since the start of the war in the Middle East on February 28. The average price has increased by more than six crowns to about CZK 39.2 per litre, according to data from the company CCS.
The price of the most common petrol, Natural 95, has increased more moderately and now averages about CZK 36.4 per litre at filling stations across the country.
Analysts say the future development of fuel prices will depend largely on how long the conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran lasts. Donald Trump initially estimated the war could last four to five weeks but has recently said it may end soon.

The conflict in the Middle East should not overshadow the war in Ukraine, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs said on Tuesday after a meeting with Czech President Petr Pavel in Riga. According to Rinkēvičs, Latvia and Czechia share a similar view of the situation in the region.
According to the Czech head of state, the Middle East conflict will have a direct impact on Europe and that European countries should discuss its consequences and seek a common approach.
The two leaders also discussed continued support for Ukraine, which has been facing Russia’s invasion for more than four years. Rinkēvičs praised Czech participation in the NATO mission in Latvia and the Czech initiative to supply ammunition to Ukraine.
Economic cooperation was also on the agenda, with opportunities for Czech companies mainly in security, defence and transport.
Pavel, who arrived in Latvia on Monday, will also meet Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. He is scheduled to open a Latvian-Czech business forum, visit parliament, lay flowers at the Freedom Monument and tour the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.

The Czech government is responding to rising petrol and diesel prices by monitoring fuel retailers’ margins, Novinky.cz reported. According to the news site, the cabinet is not planning additional measures for now.
The opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS) has proposed temporarily reducing the excise tax on diesel, which has been increasing in price much faster than petrol in recent days.
Analysts expect this trend to continue and say prices at petrol stations are likely to soon exceed CZK 40 per litre.
According to the Administration of State Material Reserves (SSHR), there is no risk of fuel shortages and supplies to Czech refineries remain smooth.
Fuel prices began rising sharply last week in connection with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Data from CCS show that diesel has increased by an average of CZK 5.53 since the end of February to CZK 38.63 per litre as of Sunday. The price of Natural 95 petrol has risen by an average of CZK 2.60 since the end of February to CZK 36.21 per litre.

The head of Krkonoše National Park, Robin Böhnisch, has been dismissed by Environment Minister Igor Červený (Motorists). According to the Park administration, the decision was made by mutual agreement. No specific reasons were given. Böhnisch’s departure comes at a time when the government has announced cuts in funding to all of the country’s national parks by tens of millions of crowns. The Krkonoše National Park Administration has already warned that, because of the cuts, it will use up its entire financial reserve this year. Minister Červený met with the leadership of national parks to discuss financing issues at the end of February, but refused to budge on the cuts.

The Czech governing coalition is considering tightening conditions for bus transport between Ukraine and the Czech Republic. Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura (SPD) told journalists that the measure is intended to curb the smuggling of military-type goods and weapons. According to Okamura, a large number of illegal transport operators are active in the Czech Republic. He also said that a working group had been set up within the police to deal with the issue.
Police Presidium spokesperson Ondřej Moravčík denied that such a working group exists. He said the police are monitoring the security issue and evaluating the information obtained, while sharing findings with partners at different working levels.
The transport association Česmad Bohemia said it does not consider operators without proper licences to be a widespread problem.

Fewer people will qualify for subsidies under the popular “New Green Savings” programme, the Czech News Agency reported. Direct contributions for home insulation or solar panel installations will now be available only to low-income households. Others will be able to use interest-free loans instead. Environment Minister Igor Červený (Motoristé sobě) announced the changes at a press conference on Monday.
Currently, applicants can receive subsidies covering up to 50 percent of ecological renovations. Under the new system, households will instead take out bank loans and the state will cover the interest.
The revised programme will launch at the turn of April and May. Owners of family houses used for permanent residence, housing cooperatives and homeowners’ associations will be able to apply.
Loans will be available for both complete renovations and partial reconstruction projects.

The speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and SPD leader, Tomio Okamura on Monday denounced remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky towards Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, saying they amounted to an open threat of physical violence. He urged the European Union leadership to distance itself from Zelensky’s comments.
Tensions between Ukraine and Hungary have been rising since late January, when Russian oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline to Slovakia and Hungary were halted following damage due to a Russian attack. Orbán accused Ukraine of delaying repairs for political reasons ahead of Hungary’s upcoming elections. Zelensky said in response that the pipeline could be repaired within about six weeks, but added that if a single EU leader blocks a proposed €90 billion loan for Ukraine, he would give Ukrainian soldiers Orban's "address" so they could speak to him "in their own language."

The Czech Republic recorded a foreign trade surplus of CZK 19.3 billion in January, up by CZK 1.5 billion year-on-year, the Czech Statistics Office said on its website.
The improved balance was mainly driven by a smaller deficit in trade in oil and natural gas, as well as a higher surplus in machinery and equipment.
Both imports and exports declined year-on-year in most commodity groups in January, according to the report. The value of exports of computers, electronic and optical instruments fell the most, by seven percent. By contrast, the value of their imports rose the most among all commodity groups, increasing by almost 17 percent.
