    Meteorologists have issued a heatwave warning for the weekend, when temperatures are expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius in places. There is also a warning of severe heat-related thunderstorms on Sunday, especially in eastern Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. People have been advised to stay out of the sun, particularly in the afternoon hours, and increase their intake of liquids.

    A parade of close to 10,000 dancers from 54 countries passed through the centre of Prague on Friday evening, symbolically opening the 2024 Dance World Cup competition. The week-long event is being held in Czechia for the very first time and according to Prague City Hall it has attracted around 20,000 foreign visitors to the capital. The Dance World Cup is the largest dance competition in the world and the second largest sports and cultural competition after the Summer Olympics. This year's event is the 14th in a row. Last year it took place in Portugal.

    The 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival opened on Friday night with a screening of the Western The Dead Don’t Hurt, written and directed by Viggo Mortensen.

    Mortensen, who is one of the big international celebrities at the festival this year, received the festival’s President’s Award at the gala opening on Friday night.

    Other big names at the festival are Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, Hollywood actor Clive Owen and Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush, who is on the jury of the main competition.

    Over the next seven days the festival will screen 136 films in 12 cinemas.

    The outgoing Vice-President of the European Commission Věra Jourová has decided to terminate her membership in the ANO party, saying it is incompatible with her plans for a future career in academia. Jourová announced her decision on the network X. Party leader Andrej Babiš said on social media that the parting was amicable.

    President Petr Pavel, who is the chief commander of the Czech Armed Forces, Defence Minister Jana Černochová and Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka on Friday laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Vítkov, honouring the memory of soldiers killed in foreign missions on Armed Forces Day. President Pavel praised the professionalism of the Czech army, its dedication and commitment to the defense of common values. Defence Minister Jana Černochová said the ministry’s most important task in the present day was to continue modernizing the army and ensure stable financing. She said everything possible is being done in both areas.

    Armed Forces Day has been celebrated in the Czech Republic since 2002 as a commemoration of the oath taken by Czechoslovak legionaries in Darney, France, in June, 1918.

    Around 1.4 million primary and secondary school goers around Czechia will receive their end-of-year report cards on Friday as schools break for the summer holidays. According to data from the Ministry of Education, some 49,500 children of Ukrainian refugees are now studying at Czech schools. The ministry has advised schools to evaluate Ukrainian refugees mainly verbally and in assessing their performance to take into account the fact that they are studying in a foreign language.

    National Bank Governor Aleš Michl has indicated that the central bank is ready to move, if a decision is made to adopt the EU currency. As soon as the political leadership calls for it, the central bank will create the conditions for the adoption of the euro, Michl said in an interview for Czech Television. However he added that he would welcome some more time before this happens, since he would like the Czech Republic to have a stronger crown before joining the eurozone and to be closer to Germany in terms of wages. Inflation is now below 3 percent and on Thursday the central bank board cut the base interest rate to 4.75 percent.

    The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has no information indicating that Czech nationals were among the victims of Thursday’s tragic rail accident in southern Slovakia, when a Eurocity train traveling from Prague to Budapest collided with a local bus. The bus was torn into two and both the engine and the bus caught fire. Seven people died in the accident and several more are reported injured. According to the Slovak authorities nobody on the train was killed or injured. The Czech Foreign Ministry said it had no information about Czechs missing in Slovakia, but would remain in contact with the authorities regarding developments, since the seven victims had not yet been identified.

    Czech Prime Minister endorsed the nominations for the highest EU posts at the summit in Brussels on Thursday. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mr Fiala said he knows all three nominees personally and that they have a good relationship with Czechia. The summit nominated Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as head of EU diplomacy and former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa as president of the European Council.

    Prior to the summit the Czech head of government met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss bilateral relations, including security and economic cooperation. Mr. Zelensky subsequently posted a short clip of the meeting on the X network, and wrote that ammunition from the Czech shells-for-Ukraine initiative is already helping Ukrainian soldiers in combat.
