  • Czechs bracing for extreme heatwave

    The Czech Republic is bracing for a tropical weekend on which temperatures are expected to hit 37 degrees Celsius in places. Both paramedics and firefighters are on alert in view of the higher risk of fires. Doctors have warned the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and children to stay out of the sun, increase their intake of fluids and avoid exertion. Experts also warn of possible complications for rail transport since tracks could be damaged by the extreme heat. According to meteorologists the heatwave should break on Monday bringing some degree of relief.

  • Czech Radio features minute-by-minute reconstruction of last phase of Operation Anthropoid

    Czech Radio’s flagship news channel Radiožurnál on Saturday featured a special audio project reconstructing the final battle between the Gestapo and the paratroopers who assassinated Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich in the crypt of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague eighty years ago. Radiožurnál's minute-by-minute reconstruction focused on each of the seven Czechoslovak paratroopers in turn, as well as the brave men and women who helped them. The program hosted historians as well as descendants of the paratroopers and people involved in the last phase of Operation Anthropoid.

  • PM and Prague mayor agree on measures to ease refugee burden on Prague

    Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib have agreed to implement a set of measures to motivate Ukrainian refugees to move from Prague to less burdened regions. A coordination mechanism will also be created to ensure that the actual transfer takes place, Mayor Hřib told reporters after the meeting. The Prague leadership has long complained about overcrowding and this week closed its refugee centre for Ukrainian refugees due to total overload. The capital has processed humanitarian visas for close to 100,000 refugees.

  • Former deputy mayor of Prague remanded in huge corruption scandal

    A Prague court has remanded in custody the former Prague deputy mayor Petr Hlubuček and another suspect, businessman Zakaria Nemrah, in a corruption case linked to the Prague Transport Company. Eleven people have been charged altogether in the case involving bribery, involvement in organized crime and suspicions of illicit drug and psychotropic substance use.

    The former deputy mayor of Prague, Petr Hlubuček and Prague businessman Michal Redl, who is also charged, are both reported to have had close links to the deputy chair of the coalition STAN party Petr Gazdik. There have been calls on him to resign and accept political responsibility for the scandal.

  • Ukrainian president among those nominated for highest Czech state distinction

    The Senate has nominated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski for the country’s highest state distinction, the Order of the White Lion. Other nominees put forward by the upper chamber are the Mašín brothers' anti-communist resistance group and the director of the counter-intelligence service BIS Michal Koudelka. The state distinctions are annually awarded by the president on the occasion of Czechoslovak Independence Day, on October 28. President Zeman announced earlier his intention to decorate the Ukrainian president with the country’s highest state distinction. Other proposals for nominations will come from the government, the Chamber of Deputies and even members of the public.

  • Czech foreign minister confident European Council will confirm Ukraine’s candidate status

    Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský expects that the European Council will confirm Ukraine's status as a candidate country for EU membership, the Czech Foreign Ministry said in a press release.  The Czech Republic is also in favour of granting candidate status to Moldova and Georgia. The European Commission on Friday recommended Ukraine's candidacy bid for EU membership. It said the country would have to implement a number of reforms that are linked to the accession process and address shortcomings in the rule of law or the fight against corruption. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski welcomed the Commission's recommendation as a historic decision.

  • Czechs saving on lunches as food prices soar

    The number of Czechs who bring home-cooked food to work in order to save money has risen from 45 to 49 per cent in the last six months, according to a survey conducted by STEM/MARK for the food voucher company Edenred which many employees in the Czech Republic receive as a bonus. Restaurants have upped lunch prices due to the rising cost of energy and basic foodstuffs and report a 20 to 30 percent drop in the number of lunches sold. Czechs have also started saving on clothes and leisure time activities.
