    The mountain rescue service in the Krkonoše Mountains has called a 3rd degree avalanche alert, following heavy snowfall overnight.  Nearly 30 cm of snow has fallen, with up to 1.3 metres on the ridges, a situation that is further complicated by a strong wind.

    Heavy snowfall is also complicating traffic in the northern parts of the country which report 15 centimeters of fresh snow overnight. The road from Tanvald to Harrachov and on to Poland remains closed for trucks. The restriction is expected to end at midnight on Sunday.

    The town of Číhošt' in the Havlíčkův Brod region is marking 73 years since the murder of priest Josef Toufar, who died after being brutally tortured by the communist secret police in 1950. The secret police  tried to force him to confess that he had staged the so-called Číhošt' miracle – when a cross in the Číhošt' church moved while he was celebrating mass.

    A special mass at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary will begin an hour before noon on Sunday, followed by a meeting of the townspeople at the local inn. The guest speaker will be evangelical clergyman Miloš Rejchrt, a former dissident and spokesman for Charter 77.

    Several thousand people attended a rally and concert in Prague in support of Ukraine on the anniversary of the start of the war. Participants waved Ukrainian flags and booed Russia, calling for an end to the Putin regime and international support for Ukraine for as long as is needed to help the country regain its freedom. Among the speakers was the Czech president-elect Petr Pavel, Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, the British, German and US ambassadors to Prague and Ukraine's Chargé d'Affaires Vitaly Usatyj. The rally was attended by hundreds of Ukrainian refugees who fled to Czechia and Russians in Prague who oppose the war.  The rally was organized by the civic association Million Moments for Democracy, Memory of the Nation, the Ukrainian Embassy and the Gift for Putin initiative.

    The collapse of Russia would present a major security threat to the world, Czech president-elect Petr Pavel said in an hour long Facebook session during which he took questions from the public. Pavel, who served as head of NATO’s Military Committee, said the disintegration of Russia and subsequent chaos could create an even more explosive situation than the world faces today, since the country has nuclear weapons. The president-elect said that it was important that after its defeat someone in Russia should retain control of its territory and be able to conduct international negotiations. He reiterated that peace talks can only begin on condition that Russia pulls out of Ukraine and the country regains full control of its territory within internationally recognized borders.

    Czech Barbora Krejčíková defeated Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, 6-4, 6-2 to win the Dubai Championships final at The Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Saturday evening. The Czech former French Open champion grabbed her first singles title of the year, and sixth of her career, beating the world's top three players consecutively to clinch the title in Dubai.

    The anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is being commemorated in Prague on Saturday with a march to the Ukrainian Embassy and a concert. A number of high-profile guests will address the gathering, including President-elect Petr Pavel, Ukraine's Chargé d'Affaires Vitaly Usatyj and British Ambassador to the Czech Republic Matthew Field. The happening, entitled We See Clearly What Needs to be Done, is organized by the civic association Million Moments for Democracy, Memory of the Nation, the Ukrainian Embassy and the Gift for Putin initiative.

    A car crashed onto a sidewalk in Prague's Jugoslávská street near the I.P. Pavlova tram stop on Friday night hitting pedestrians and crashing into a building. According to Twitter, paramedics treated five injured people, two car passengers and three pedestrians. No one died in the accident. Paramedics said the driver had some kind of seizure, which caused the accident, and suffered injuries to his arms and legs. One of the pedestrians suffered more serious injuries, with head trauma and injuries to both legs. The other three people were treated for minor injuries.

    General Emil Boček, the last surviving Czech airman who served in Britain’s RAF during WWII, turned 100 on  Saturday, February 25. The veteran pilot served with the RAF’s 312 and 310 squadrons and participated in over two dozen operational flights. After the war, he was persecuted by the communist regime and was only recognized and awarded for his services after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He received many awards including the highest Czech state distinction Order of the White Lion.  Emil Boček lives in the town of his birth, Brno, where he is an honorary citizen.

    Heavy snow is complicating traffic in northern Bohemia and the country’s mountain regions, the ctk news agency reported. Road workers closed the road from Tanvald to Poland for trucks on Saturday morning. Meteorologists have warned that up to 60 centimeters of new snow may fall in the Hradec Králové and Liberec regions over the weekend. High wind and icy roads are complicating the situation. Drivers have been warned not to set out for the mountain regions without winter tires and appropriate gear.
