The most decorated Czech jockey of all time, Filip Minařík, has died at the age of 48. Minařík was a four-time German horseracing champion and won almost 1,800 races until a career-ending injury in 2020, after which he was placed in an artificial coma for four months.

The jockey’s death has been announced by Czech and German horseracing news sites and there have been reports that he committed suicide after suffering from severe depression.

Minařík, whose first race was in 1991, had followed in the footsteps of his father Ferdinand Minařík, also a successful jockey.

A plan to introduce charges to drive cars into some historical parts of Prague from next year may not be implemented, Novinky.cz reported on Tuesday. The idea has been put forward by the deputy mayor for transport, the Pirate Party’s Zdeněk Hřib, and the central Prague 1 district. However, it is not supported by the mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda of the Civic Democrats, other representatives of the three-party Together alliance or districts neighbouring Prague1, the news website said.

The head of City Hall’s transport committee described the proposed charges as nonsense and populist.

There have been reports that motorists will have to pay CZK 200 to enter some streets in the city centre.

MPs from ANO say they will challenge government legislation restricting early retirement and slowing pension increases at the Constitutional Court. They made the announcement after a meeting of the opposition party’s parliamentary group on Monday evening. ANO’s Alena Schillerová said the petition could be filed by the end of October.

Ms. Schillerová said the government’s bills were illegitimate for two reasons: the overriding of usual procedure in the lower house, and breaching the principle of expectation in the case of the regulations on early retirement.

A lower house debate on the government amendments, currently in the second reading, is expected to run for some days.

Archaeologists have discovered skeletons believed to be about 7,000 years old in Ostrožská Lhota near Uherské Hradiště in South Moravia. The human remains were discovered by builders laying utility lines. They reported the find to a regional museum, which carried out research at the site in July and August.

The archaeologists said that they had uncovered exceptionally well-preserved burial places of people from the Middle Neolithic period. They also found a number of shards of decorated ceramic vessels and a small ceramic arm, most likely from a figurine of religious significance.

One of the country’s leading psychiatrists, Jan Cimický, has been charged with four counts of rape and 35 counts of extortion. The cases relate to his former patients, with close to thirty women accusing him of sexual harassment or assault. Prosecutors originally proposed pressing charges against Cimický last October, when they accused him of multiple rape and extortion. But the prosecutor's office returned the case to police for further investigation a month later, pointing out that some of the cases were time-barred. The police proposed filing new charges in June of this year. The psychiatrist has retained his private practice throughout that time.

The City of Prague and the descendants of Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha have reached agreement to end a drawn-out court battle over ownership rights to Mucha's famous Slav Epic. Mucha’s grandson has agreed to withdraw his lawsuit against the city for having failed to fulfil the condition under which Mucha bequeathed the masterpiece to the City of Prague – and that is building appropriate exhibition spaces for the priceless canvases. The two sides have now agreed to cooperate in creating a centre where they will be displayed. For the time being, Slav Epic is on display at the château in Moravský Krumlov in south Moravia.

President Petr Pavel has rejected claims that he damaged state finances by delaying the signing of an amendment to the pensions law. He said he signed the bill well within the 15 day deadline afforded by the law and noted that the government should have planned its timetable for the bill better. He also criticized the cabinet for not informing the public adequately about the forthcoming changes to early retirement pensions, so that people could prepare for them.

Labour Minister Marian Jurečka said on Czech Television on Sunday that the president’s hesitation in signing into force a bill tightening the conditions for early retirement and the subsequent one-month delay in bringing it into force will cost the state treasury up to 4 billion crowns. Thousands of Czechs close to retirement age scrambled to file for early retirement over the summer under more advantageous conditions and Jurečka said their numbers could increase by another 10,000 in October.
