The Crucian carp, formerly the most common fish in Czech lakes and ponds is on the verge of extinction in the country, experts from the Czech Academy of Sciences warn. Although this particular breed has the ability to survive in inhospitable conditions, it has lost its original natural habitats, and it is being pushed out by invasive species, such as the Silver carp. Scientists from the Czech Academy of Sciences and experts from the Czech University of Life Sciences have launched a program to save the breed and have asked the public to help. The aim of the project is to map the loss of the Crucian carp, to identify residual populations and find suitable sites for its reintroduction. Fishermen, pond owners, water managers or nature lovers can help by filling out a questionnaire on the academy’s website. The survey will run from September 2021 to August 2022.

A Czech military plane carrying 46 Czech diplomats and their colleagues and family members arrived from Afghanistan in Prague on Monday morning. The Czech Republic decided to evacuate its diplomats from Kabul after Taliban forces quickly took control of the entire country, including the capital. The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jakub Kulhánek, said the rescue operation would continue but no details would be released until the mission had been completed. Deputy PM and Interior Minister Jan Hamáček said it had been a miracle that the Czech plane had taken off from Kabul airport in view of the rapidly deteriorating situation.

According to the association Vlčí máky, which has launched a Save the Interpretors initiative, one of the interpreters who cooperated with the Czech military in Afghanistan has been kidnapped by Taliban forces. The association says this was confirmed by the man’s brother. Others reportedly remain in hiding.
