Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Prague on Friday for talks on energy, security and the war in Ukraine. At a joint press conference afterwards, the two leaders said the European Union must bring high energy prices under control in order to remain competitive.

De Wever praised Babiš for raising the issue of energy prices at the European level and for openly addressing the problem. Babiš said the Czech Republic remains active in efforts to revise the EU emissions trading system. The two leaders also discussed energy security and nuclear power.

Both prime ministers said they hoped the war in Ukraine would end soon and lead to peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow. Babiš added that Belgium is an important trading partner for the Czech Republic. Czech exports to Belgium reached a record CZK 136 billion last year, while total trade between the two countries amounted to CZK 220 billion.

President Petr Pavel promoted ten men to general ranks at Prague Castle on Friday on the occasion of Victory Day. Eight were appointed brigadier generals, while two others received the rank of major general. The promotions were made on the recommendation of the government.

Among the newly promoted brigadier generals are special forces chief Tomáš Krampla and Antonín Genser, deputy commander of the Territorial Forces. Jan Pavlíček, deputy director of the Security Information Service, or BIS, was also promoted to a general rank.

Pavlíček’s promotion drew criticism from the Czech Confederation of Political Prisoners because of his past links to the former communist-era secret police, the StB. Czech presidents traditionally promote military, police and fire service officers to general ranks twice a year, on May 8 and October 28.

President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš remain at odds over the makeup of the Czech delegation to July’s NATO summit in Ankara. Speak to journalists after talks at Prague Castle on Friday, Pavel said he still plans to attend, despite Babiš arguing that the president should not be part of the delegation.

Pavel said representing the country abroad is a constitutional power of the president. He added that he would consider filing a constitutional complaint only as a last resort if he is ultimately excluded from the summit. The government is expected to decide on the delegation in June.

The president said he insists on attending the opening part of the summit, including an informal dinner of heads of state and discussions on global security. The official talks, he said, could then be attended by Babiš together with the foreign and defence ministers.

The International Federation of Journalists has condemned a Czech government proposal to fund Czech Television and Czech Radio directly from the state budget. Delegates at the organisation’s congress in Paris warned the plan would increase political control over public media and undermine their independence, the Czech News Agency reported, citing the Czech Journalists’ Syndicate.

The government wants to abolish licence fees from next January and replace them with state funding. Under the proposal, both broadcasters would also receive less money than they currently collect through fees.

The journalists’ federation says the changes conflict with European rules on media freedom and has called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to withdraw the proposal. Staff at Czech Television and Czech Radio have already declared strike readiness in protest.

Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul signed a memorandum in Berlin on Friday extending the Czech-German Future Fund until 2037. Established under the 1997 Czech-German Declaration, the fund supports cross-border projects and Czech-German reconciliation initiatives. The two sides will decide on its future financing at a later stage.

Macinka welcomed the fact that the meeting took place on May 8th, the anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. Earlier in the day, he laid flowers at Berlin’s former Plötzensee prison, where more than 670 Czechoslovaks were executed by the Nazis during the war.

Speaking there with Czech-German Discussion Forum co-chair Jörg Nürnberger, Macinka also commented on the planned Sudeten German congress in Brno later this month. He said Sudeten German leader Bernd Posselt had underestimated the reaction the event would provoke in the Czech Republic and criticised the choice of local partners for the gathering.

People across the Czech Republic are commemorating the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe at memorial ceremonies held throughout the country.

The main commemoration took take place at Prague’s Vítkov memorial with president Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš attending along with veterans from the war. The ceremony opened with the Czech national anthem, followed by the laying of wreaths in honour of those killed in the conflict.

In his address, President Pavel described the Second World War as the bloodiest conflict in human history and a warning for future generations. He said the tragedy showed where the loss of responsibility, solidarity and respect for human life could lead, adding that the legacy of the war should serve not only as a historical reminder but also as a lesson for the present.

Among those attending the ceremony were also the speakers of both chambers of Parliament, Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka, and representatives of veterans’ organisations. Further commemorative events are taking place later in the day in Prague and in cities across the country, including Brno, Pardubice and Liberec.

All three newly accused persons have filed complaints against the decision to initiate criminal prosecution in the so-called Bitcoin case. The Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office will decide on them, but they have not yet been submitted to it, Radek Bartoš, deputy of the High Public Prosecutor’s Office in Olomouc, told the Czech News Agency today.

The Olomouc High Public Prosecutor’s Office did not disclose the names of those charged with money laundering and abuse of official authority, citing the Criminal Procedure Code. However, according to information from the Czech News Agency and other media, the accused include former Justice Minister Pavel Blažek (formerly ODS), his former deputy Radomír Daňhel, and lawyer Kárim Titz.

The case is linked to last year’s acceptance by the Ministry of Justice of a multi-billion-crown donation from Tomáš Jiřikovský, who had previously been convicted of embezzlement, drug trafficking, and illegal arms possession.

Average fuel prices in the Czech Republic have risen again in week-on-week comparison. The average price of the best-selling petrol, Natural 95, is now CZK 42.80 per litre at domestic petrol stations, 1.14 CZK more than a week ago.

Diesel, however, has fallen by 49 hellers to an average of CZK 43.31, according to data from CCS, which tracks fuel prices. The maximum price, which the Ministry of Finance began publishing daily in response to sharp increases in fuel costs following the outbreak of fighting in the Middle East, is currently CZK 44.52 for petrol. Diesel may be sold at a maximum of CZK 44.60 per litre.

Fuel prices at Czech petrol stations are not expected to change significantly in the coming days. The oil market situation remains tense despite recent price declines, and further developments will depend on the geopolitical situation.
