The Ministry of Labour will prepare a proposal to change the rules for early retirement for demanding professions, Labour Minister Aleš Juchelka (ANO) said after a meeting with trade union leaders in Ostrava. Trade unions are calling for the option of early retirement for more workers in hazardous occupations. Under the present system, introduced by the former government, only workers in the highest-risk fourth category and a limited number of selected professions can retire earlier without a reduction in benefits. This applies to around 12,000 people. A further 108,000 workers in the third category, were excluded from the reform amendment due to the slower increase in the retirement age. Trade unions are pushing to make them eligible for early retirement.

Josef Turek, a Czech veteran of the Second World War battles at Dunkirk, has received France’s highest state decoration, the Legion of Honour. The award was presented on Wednesday in Olomouc by French Ambassador Stéphane Crouzat, the Czech Defence Ministry said.
Now 99 years old, Turek is believed to be the last surviving Czech participant in the Battle of Dunkirk. He received the decoration in the rank of knight.

Victims of sexual abuse in the church are calling for the creation of an independent commission to investigate the cases. The proposal was presented to journalists on Thursday by victims’ representative Ladislav Koubek, ahead of a meeting with President Petr Pavel. The head of state met with around two dozen victims from Czechia and Slovakia.
The victims say the commission could follow models already used abroad and could operate under a research institution, a university, or the ombudsman’s office.
They are also calling for the resignation of České Budějovice Bishop Vlastimil Kročil, whom they accuse of covering up abuse. The group also opposes a planned Vatican treaty, warning it could expand confession secrecy, complicate investigations, and potentially conflict with the constitution.

The hepatitis A outbreak in Prague has stabilised and the number of new cases is declining, the head of the Prague hygiene office Martina Marešová, said on Thursday, adding that the situation could return to normal during the summer months.
Last week, the number of newly reported cases fell below 20 for the first time since April last year. Since the beginning of January, health authorities have recorded 89 new infections in the Czech capital.
According to Marešová, the situation is still considered an epidemic. Health officials define a normal state as only a few cases per month, mostly linked to infections contracted abroad. Last year, hepatitis A affected 1,377 people in Prague, compared with just 37 cases the year before.
