Germany will contribute a further €300 million ($345 million) to the Czech-led ammunition initiative for Ukraine, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said during a meeting with his Czech counterpart, Jaromír Zůna.
According to Pistorius, the funding will be enough to purchase around 50,000 rounds of ammunition for Ukraine.
Pistorius called the Czech ammunition initiative an important tool for supporting Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion for a fifth year, and thanked Prague for maintaining the program.
The Czech Republic launched the initiative in 2024 to help Ukraine counter Russia’s artillery advantage on the battlefield.

June rainfall has eased soil drought conditions that had reached extreme levels in some parts of the Czech Republic and caused irreversible damage to some crops, according to the InterSucho drought-monitoring project run by the CzechGlobe institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
As of Sunday, the two most severe drought categories in soil layers up to one metre deep affected only a small percentage of the country. Future drought conditions will depend on upcoming rainfall, the report said.
Experts warn that just a few dry days could quickly deepen drought conditions again. While the topsoil layer, up to 40 centimetres deep, has improved in areas that received rain, deeper soil layers remain dry.

The Czech government is determined to tighten the country’s policy on soft drugs. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said after Wednesday's cabinet meeting that the government intends to push through amendments to four laws related to addictive substances, introducing a total of 18 measures to clamp down on drug abuse.
He did not specify which legislation will be amended. However, according to information obtained by the Czech News Agency (ČTK), the proposals include removing kratom from legal sale, tightening regulations on cannabis growers and users, speeding up the process of classifying substances as prohibited or under review, and expanding the powers of municipalities and police.
The package is expected to be discussed by the Government Council for the Coordination of Addiction Policy on 17 June. A document seen by ČTK indicates that kratom could be withdrawn from the market and access to cannabis could once again be restricted.

At a meeting with the heads of Czech Radio and Czech Television on Tuesday representatives of the ruling coalition reiterated their intention to push ahead with a plan to abolish television and radio license fees, and replace them with state funding.
The cabinet will discuss how much funding Czech Television (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo) should receive from the state budget next Monday. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who was present at the talks, said the amount would be fair, predictable and indexed to inflation.
Babiš rejected opposition claims that the change is aimed at influencing public-service media, saying the goal is to end charges for people who do not use the services.
Czech Radio Director-General René Zavoral said after the meeting that there had been no debate on the matter and media representatives were merely informed of the government's plan to abolish the current license-fee law.

Aleš Svoboda is set to become the first Czech astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), most likely in the second half of 2027. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced on Monday.
The mission follows an agreement on the implementation of a Czech orbital mission to the ISS signed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the company Vast.
Speaking at an event at Prague Planetarium on Monday, Babiš said that Svoboda is expected not only to take part in the mission but also to pilot a Dragon spacecraft operated by the US company SpaceX. The spacecraft will be launched into Earth orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.
The role would further enhance the significance of the mission for the Czech Republic, as only around 20 people worldwide have experience piloting a Dragon spacecraft.
Prime Minister Babiš said that Svoboda’s mission represents a major opportunity for Czech scientists, universities and companies to contribute to the development of technologies that could find applications in industry, healthcare and other key sectors.
