A rare plant, Micheli’s flatsedge, has been found in the Slavice Game Reserve within the Železné hory protected landscape. Botanist Lenka Šafářová from the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice discovered it on the dried bed of a pond. The species thrives only in specific muddy habitats, such as temporarily drained ponds, and struggles in competition with other plants. Its seeds can remain viable for up to 20 years, waiting for the right conditions. Experts say the discovery highlights the ecological value of Železné hory as a refuge for species living at the edge of their natural range.

State-owned grid operator ČEPS plans to invest more than CZK 80 billion in Czech power networks over the next ten years, up from around CZK 60 billion in the past decade. The program focuses on duplicating existing lines, building new substations, and modernizing aging infrastructure to meet rising demand, the shift from coal, and the growth of renewables and electric mobility. Key projects include strengthening Prague’s supply and expanding connections with Slovakia. ČEPS warns that lengthy permitting procedures remain a major obstacle, as construction itself usually takes only one to two years.

Poland, with NATO support, deployed helicopters and fighter jets in a two-hour preventive operation, even closing Lublin’s airport due to the drone threat near Ukraine’s frontier. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (a candidate fo Civic Democratic Party) stressed on X that Moscow’s actions are deliberate provocations, not “mistakes.” He vowed that Russia must face consequences, confirming Czechia’s support for further sanctions alongside NATO allies. Laying flower’s at Masaryk’ s statue on Hradčany Square Vystrčil highlighted his commitment to democracy, his statesmanship and critical thinking.

On Friday, September 19, officials will open a sealed envelope said to contain Masaryk’s final words. The document was handed to the National Archive in 2005 by Antonín Sum, secretary to Masaryk’s son Jan, with instructions to keep it sealed for 20 years. According to Sum, it contains a message that Masaryk dictated to his son shortly before his death.

Whilst the envelope itself remained safely stored, Antonín Sum was arrested and tried for treason in 1950 by the newly installed communist regime in Czechoslovakia. He served 12 years of his 22-year sentence in prison. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Sum regained possession of Masaryk’s archives, which gradually returned to Czechia from abroad. The Czech Republic has nearly doubled its solar power generation over the past five years, rising from 2.3 terawatt-hours in 2019 to 4 terawatt-hours in 2024. According to a new analysis by the think tank Ember, solar energy covered 14.7 percent of the country’s electricity consumption in June 2025, up from 10.5 percent a year earlier. Investment subsidies and the sharp fall in photovoltaic panel prices in recent years have both contributed to the surge.

The study highlights that solar generation in Central Europe, namely in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, has grown twice as fast as the EU average since 2019. Cumulative output in the region increased nearly six fold by 2024, compared with a 2.5-fold rise across the EU.
