Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (SPOLU) said Russian forces must be “kicked out of Ukraine,” responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s unexpected shift in tone after meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York. Trump suggested Kyiv, with EU and NATO support, could retake all lost territory and possibly more—an about-face from his earlier calls for territorial concessions. Lipavský welcomed both Trump’s stance and his emphasis on ending Europe’s reliance on Russian energy, stressing that Czechia has already taken that step. Other Czech politicians offered mixed reactions: some praised Trump’s push for ending the war, while others dismissed his statement as yet another policy reversal without substance.

Czech President Petr Pavel told the UN Security Council in New York that the world must respond to Russia’s aggression with strength and a united global reaction. He condemned Moscow’s disregard for peace and international law, citing recent drone incursions into Polish airspace as part of Russia’s deliberate strategy to intimidate its neighbors. Expressing full solidarity with Poland, Estonia, and Romania, he called the violations a “clear act of aggression.” Pavel also stressed that Ukraine must be central to any peace talks and urged all countries, particularly China, to stop enabling Russia’s war, which he warned threatens global security.

By offering its unequivocal support, the Czech government legitimizes Israel’s violations of humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip, Marek Štys, head of humanitarian programs at People in Need, told ČTK in an interview.

According to him, government representatives should instead join the international community in putting pressure on Israeli politicians to agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Without that, Štys says, the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza cannot improve.
