In Bratislava a new art exhibition called "The Dark Ages" reflects the mood of 1970s and 80s Slovakia, when an end to the communist era was not in sight. Referenda on membership are being held in several European Union candidate states this year, with Slovenia likely to hold theirs in February, if the government accepts such a proposal this week.
