Duka: new pope's knowledge of Czech Church is an advantage

Czech Cardinal Dominik Duka welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV, calling it a sign and symbol for today’s world. The American cardinal Robert Prevost, who took the papal name Leo XIV, was elected Thursday and stressed the need for peace and closeness to those who suffer in his first address. Duka, who did not vote due to age limits, noted that the new pope had visited Prague several times and is familiar with the local Church. Church leaders in Czechia expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV will be a unifying figure, emphasizing faith, service, and wisdom.
