PM Babiš: Czech Republic not to accept any illegal migrants

The Czech Republic will not accept any illegal migrants, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš told the Czech News Agency on Sunday in reaction to Italy’s appeal to the EU for help with taking in African migrants.

Mr Babiš pointed out that the EU agreement on migration was based on a voluntary basis. He said taking in more migrants was not a solution, and would only increase Europe’s problem.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has appealed to EU countries to take in some of the 450 migrants rescued from an overcrowded ship in the Mediterranean on Saturday. France and Malta have already agreed to host 50 people each and other EU members states will also take some of the asylum seekers.

Czech scientists call for better water management and measures against drought

Czech scientists urge politicians to step up their efforts in dealing with water management and drought. In an open letter addressed to Czech political leadership, scientists from the Czech limnological society have called for improving the country’s water management policy, that would take into account landscape as a whole.

According to the head of the society, Martin Rulík from Palacký University in Olomouc, insufficient care of the landscape results in wiping out of forests, degradation of agriculture land and the heating of cities.

OECD general secretary to present report on Czech economy in Prague

General Secretary of the OECD, Ángel Gurría, is set to arrive in Prague on Sunday. Mr Gurría will present the organisation’s regular economic survey and the environmental performance review of the Czech Republic.

OECD’s Secretary General is scheduled to hold meetings with PM Andrej Babiš, as well as with several other high-level officials on Monday. He will also meet with the representatives of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and with the leaders of the unions.

Warm weather set to continue in next four weeks

Temperatures over the next four weeks should not fall below average for the time of year, with daytime highs hovering around 25 degrees Celsius, according to a regular four-week forecast issued by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute.

The coming week should see temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius. Rain and storms are also expected but precipitation for the whole four-week period should be below the long-term average.

Krejčíková and Siniaková win doubles final at Wimbledon

The Czech pair Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková have won the women's doubles final at Wimbledon, defeating Czech-US duo Květa Peschkeová and Nicole Melichar 6-4, 4-6 and 6-0.

They are only the second ever Czech female doubles pairing to take a trophy at Wimbledon, following Jana Novotná and Helena Suková who won in 1989 and 1990.

Krejčíková and Siniaková, who are both 22, have also won the women’s doubles title at this year’s French Open in Paris.

Czechs take two bronze medals at World Rowing Cup in Lucerne

Czech rower Ondřej Synek took the bronze medal at the World Rowing Cup in Switzerland’s Lucerne on Sunday. The Czech World Champion came third in the men’s single skull event, finishing behind Robert Manson of New Zealand and Oliver Zeidler of Germany.

Jakub Podrazil and Lukáš Helešic finished third in the men’s pair event and currently occupy the first place in the World Cup rankings.
