Czech parliament begins debate on higher TV and radio license fees
The lower house of Czech parliament has started the final round of approving a controversial bill to raise television and radio license fees and broaden the base of payers. However, a vote is unlikely as the opposition ANO and SPD parties have announced plans for filibusters. The government argues the changes will stabilize Czech Television and Czech Radio, ensuring their long-term sustainability. Critics label it a "blanket tax," as households would pay for any device capable of receiving broadcasts, including via the internet. The bill proposes raising the TV fee to CZK 150 and the radio fee to CZK 55 per month.
