Zetor: The tractor from Brno that conquered the world turns 80
Exactly 80 years ago, on March 15, 1946, Brno Zbrojovka handed over three Zetor 25 tractors to the first customers. This began the history of the brand, which later became one of the most famous export symbols of Czechoslovakia.
From arms production to agricultural machinery
After World War II, Zbrojovka Brno was looking for a new application outside of arms production. Designer František Musil and his team completed the first prototype of the tractor in November 1945. A few months later, the Zetor 25 was ready for the market and quickly gained a reputation as a reliable and simple machine. The model was officially presented at the Prague Fair in 1946 and mass production soon began. Almost 3,500 units were produced in the first year.
Export success and global brand
The Zetor 25 became one of the most successful Czechoslovak export products. More than 60 percent of production went abroad – and not only to Europe. The press at the time even reported on exports to Tibet. Famous personalities, such as Yuri Gagarin and Che Guevara, also visited the Brno plant. The brand gradually grew and in the 1950s production moved to a new plant in Brno-Líšeň. Zetor became an independent company and at its peak produced around 30 thousand tractors a year, most of them for export. In some countries – such as India or Ghana – the tractors were even assembled locally.
Zetor today
Although the company has struggled with a decline in demand in recent years, it is trying to make a new start. It recently launched production of a new model line, which is intended to symbolize the modernization and return of the brand to world markets. Eight decades after the delivery of the first three tractors, Zetor remains one of the most prominent Czech industrial names – and is still fighting for its place among global manufacturers of agricultural machinery.
