Word of the Week: křída – 'chalk'
Křída is another one of those humble Czech words with a Roman origin. It goes all the way to Latin crēta, which likewise referred to chalk, and which also developed into the Italian and French words for the soft, white rock: creta and craie.
English’s word, chalk, is unrelated. Nonetheless, you may have heard of the ancient period of time when dinosaurs still walked the Earth, and which was named by geologists after extensive beds of chalk formed during that era: the Cretaceous period.
