Now that current EU members have cleared what they view as most major hurdles to enlargement, the mood in some countries expected to join in 2004 has turned sceptical. A survey done by Brussels has shown that there's a still a slim majority in the candidate countries to join the union, but opposition is on the rise. Might the Poles, after all the doubts in Brussels about their economic and agricultural problems, finally turn the EU down?

We take an in-depth look at the film industry in Central Europe. In Prague, the wave of commercial and artistic successes has been described by some critics as the return of the Czech New Wave. The situation for aspiring film makers in neighbouring Slovakia is very difficult, with the country producing only 2 or 3 films a year, and there are similar complaints about lack of support in Austria.
