On Monday morning two-year-old Lucie was being carried by her mother when they were both run over in the grounds of Vinohrady Teaching Hospital in Prague by Jan Karas, a head doctor from the hospital's neonatal department.

Doctor Karas was extremely drunk, with the equivalent of well over a pint of hard alcohol in his blood at the time of the incident, which took place at 10 in the morning. A colleague of his told the daily Pravo that he showed no signs of drunkenness an hour earlier, at 9.

While the speed limit in the grounds of the hospital is 20 kilometres an hour, police said Mr Karas had been driving at around 80. Witnesses said he tried to flee the scene but crashed into a truck before being apprehended by other doctors.

He faces up to five years in prison if found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm. On top of that, Jan Karas is almost certain to be sacked as soon as the hospital discusses the matter with the doctor's union.

As for two-year-old Lucie, she suffered serious injuries to her head and internal organs and underwent a six-hour operation on Monday. She is now fighting for her life in hospital. Doctors said on Tuesday morning the next two or three days would be decisive.
