Temelin nuclear power station reconnected to national grid

The first reactor at the Temelin nuclear power station was connected to the national grid for the first time in two months on Sunday morning. Temelin had been shut down for repairs to the non-nuclear part of the station. It is now running at around 40 percent of capacity. There has been a great deal of controversy over the south Bohemia plant, which critics say is unsafe.

Ministers Kavan and Tvrdik visit Kuwait

The Czech foreign minister, Jan Kavan, and the defence minister, Jaroslav Tvrdik, have visited Kuwait, where they met local officials and Czech soldiers. Since February some 350 Czech anti-chemical troops have been stationed in Kuwait, where they are taking part in the United States-led campaign in the region. The Czech singers Anna K and Martin Maxa accompanied the two ministers, and performed a concert for the soldiers on Saturday.

Czech and Polish prime ministers lay wreath at Terezin concentration camp

The Czech prime minister, Milos Zeman, and his Polish counterpart, Leszek Miller, have laid a wreath at the Terezin World War II concentration camp in central Bohemia. Mr Miller, who is on a two-day visit to the Czech Republic, said on Saturday that Terezin had suffered in a similar way to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, and that people should not forget such terrible places. Some 32,000 people died at Terezin, known in German as Theresinstadt, while 100,000 inmates were later killed at other concentration camps.

Civic Democrat MP Miroslav Benes wins anti-environmental award

An award for the most anti-environmental policies of 2001 has been given to the Civic Democrat MP Miroslav Benes. Mr Benes is the chairman of the lower house committee for regional development and the environment. The environmental organisation Friends of the Earth said it was presenting Mr Benes with the award - known as Ropak - for his efforts to have Sumava national park reduced in size and his advocacy of the building of a motorway between Prague and Ceske Budejovice.

Racing driver Tomas Enge has best result of season

The Czech Formula 3000 racing driver Tomas Enge has come second in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Enge's placing in Saturday's race was his best result of the season so far, and puts him in fifth place in the points table.

Czech women's tennis team loses to Croatia in first round of Fed Cup

The Czech Republic's women's tennis team have lost 3:2 to Croatia in the first round of the Fed Cup. It was two games all going into the doubles on Sunday afternoon, in which Iveta Benesova and Eva Birnerova were beaten 1:6 2:6 by the Croatian pair of Iva Majoliova and Jelena Kostanicova.
