Baros scores winning goal to make dream start for Aston Villa

One face is splashed all across Monday's newspapers in the Czech Republic: Czech international striker Milan Baros, in the claret and blue of English Premier League side Aston Villa. After an unsettled summer at Liverpool it didn't take Baros long to settle in at his new club, as he made a dream debut on Saturday, scoring the only goal of the game after just 11 minutes. Villa fans chanted the now traditional "Milan, Milan" and manager David O'Leary was full of praise for the 23-year-old from north Moravia; he says Baros will prove a valuable player for the club for years to come. Fellow Czech Patrik Berger also made his debut for Aston Villa.

Jarosik gets first Premiership goal, Skacel continues amazing run in Scotland

Meanwhile, Jiri Jarosik scored his first Premiership goal on Saturday, as he helped Birmingham City to their first win of the season. The Czech midfielder is on loan from Chelsea.

And Rudolf Skacel has done it again! His goal in Hearts 2-1 win over Motherwell was his fifth in five games. Skacel, who has been renamed "Rudi" by Hearts fans and the Scottish media, could see his phenomenal form rewarded with a place in the Czech Republic's team to face Romania on Saturday, in an all-important World Cup qualifier.

Nedved not to return from international retirement

One name who won't be on the team sheet is former captain Pavel Nedved. The greatest Czech player of his generation has said that he definitely will not be returning to the national side.

In the Czech football league there were goals galore at the weekend - a very impressive 24 in seven games. Liberec continue to lead the table, after a 2:0 away win over Jihlava.

Rossi wows large crowd with win in Czech Grand Prix

All eyes were on the Czech Republic's second city Brno on Sunday for motorcycling's Czech Grand Prix, which was won by last year's runner-up Valentino Rossi. The Italian Moto GP world champion had to pull out all the stops after starting fourth on the grid; he put in a brilliant performance, wowing the crowd as he overook leader Sete Gibernau on the penultimate lap. And what a crowd it was - around 80,000 fans thronged the Brno circuit for the biggest motorsport event of the year in this country.

Safarova wins second WTA title

Lucie Safarova notched up her second WTA title with victory in tennis's Forest Hills Classic on Saturday. The Czech overcame Sania Mirza of India 3-6 7-5 6-4 in a tight final. Safarova, who is 18, is going out with another upcoming Czech tennis player, Tomas Berdych, 20 next month. Both are taking part in the US Open which is just getting underway in New York, but the Czech to watch for is probably Radek Stepanek, who is seeded 16th.
